Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I was so tempted to give this one 5 stars.......2005-05-16

This CD contains 3 truly incredible tunes. The best song on here is Be Bop Deluxe-Maid in Heaven. This is an incredible power pop song, on a par with such power pop classics as The Knack-My Sharona, The Raspberries-Go All the Way, and Badfinger-No Matter What, which are 3 of the greatest songs of all time in any genre. This CD almost got 5 stars just for this song alone. It's criminal that this song was not a US hit. It clocks in at well under 3 minutes and would fit right in nowadays on classic rock stations sandwiched in between a block of Steve Miller Band, Boston, Foreigner and Bad Company songs.
The second great tune is Pussycat-Mississippi. Again, it's a mystery why this wasn't a US hit. The title of the song is American! It is a country pop classic, and could have easiily been an across the board smash. If Abba had gone country pop, they'd probably sound like this.
The 3rd great song is a spoof song, The Wurzels-Combine Harvester (Brand New Key). Admittedly, it was probably too British to have been a US hit. It sounds like Melanie-Brand New Key, but the lyrics are completely different. Hard to describe this one, a hybrid of folk-country-pop. This song is not nearly as silly as nonsense like Chuck Berry-My Ding-a-Ling (which was a US hit) and is very catchy.
The US chart hits on here include Dr. Hook-A Little Bit More, Tavares-Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel, KC & the Sunshing Band-Shake Your Booty and Brass Construction-Movin', although this last song was nowhere near the hit that the other 3 songs were.
Admittedly, if not for these 3 stellar tracks back to back to back (tracks 12 thru 14), I'd probably rate this CD even lower than 4 stars as the rest of the songs are ok to good but don't compare to the best songs. Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel-Love's a Prima Donna is a good song, but their cover of Here Comes the Sun is Ok at best and doesn't come close to the Beatles' version.
The 2 prerequisite Hot Chocolate songs (just about every CD in this series has at least 1 to 2 Hot Chocolate songs on each CD) are far from their best work.
