Album Description

Singularity's debut CD has definite leanings towards 80's Rush with interesting song structures, growling bass work, and excellent lead vocal melodies. A must-buy for fans of Moving Pictures, Signals, and Power Windows.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars really really good!!!.......2006-08-18

one must consider oneself lucky when you find such an obscure album that winds up being so delightful and charming that you lament the fact that few people will ever hear it. Singularity's debut, _Color of Space_, is a cd like that. It draws healthily from its progrock influences and siphons them through a creative filter that creates a unique album that captures both the usual prog trappings with really great, catchy songs. Lots of tripped-out time sigs, crispy grooves, laser-beam synths, and geeky vocals all seem to conspire in a way that creates a perfect, coherent whole out of disparate influences, like Rush, Genesis, with a touch of Marillion, and maybe even TMBG. "Ripple in Time" kicks things off with clean grooves, simple and direct melodic lines with an indomitably catchy chorus, and proggy twists and turns. "Mars Direct" is a Rush-like instrumental. "Who We Are" is a beautiful prog-ballad with sorrowful keys, and the more somber, flat vocals at the beginning and end (with moving lyrical turn at the end) is a powerful touch. "Strange Attaction" is a weird song about, um, biological impulses? It's funky. "Lenses" is a fantastic 16-minute epic to close the album, moving through its multifaceted parts with total coherence and a propulsive finale. "Ebb and Flow" is awesome with a beautiful solo piano interlude. The music is really groovy, light (not `lite') and addicting. the music is so well-crafted that all the tight, impressive musicality of it (all the prog trickey you can expect) almost becomes unnoticeable. Check it out!

3 out of 5 stars Their stuff is resolutely inspired by some Rush epic songs.......2003-03-26

Actually I have to rate this work 3 stars,1/2 once again, even though their stuff is resolutely inspired by some Rush epic songs, combining several music aspects in the vein of Rush and a few bunches of Marillion tunes at times, which is not very original...nevermind, the track "Mars Direct" is the most inspiring tune, despite of being too much derivative as an instrumental(if you always regard the epic stuff by Rush); instead I don't like the flat vocals by Goldhawk, as usual, but nowadays it's a common defect, among several new-prog bands;however I must admit that the melodies within "Who We are" are quite pretty or captivating, but it's clear to me that I prefer another kind of vocals. At last the output is very good, thanks also to a good bass guitar job, Geddy Lee-like, even though They will do better things in the next recent album "Between Sunlight and shadow", which is a true promise. After listening to this latter, I hope They will be able to grow from the point of view of their personality, by making something more original and personal too!!

Recommended,if you like the epic stuff by Rush, in a modern and sometimes simpler version...in this case you will check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Rush/Marillion inspired progressive rock........2003-01-23

Singularity plays a brand of progressive rock that combines various aspects of Rush and Marillion and at times this combination makes the band sound a bit like Ayreon. The Rush similarities stand out the most blending the best aspects of 2112/Hemispheres-era Rush (long, epic songs) with Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures-era Rush (catchy vocal melodies). What I like most about this approach is that Singularity successfully merges my two favorite aspects of Rush.

1. "Ripple in Time" - This song starts off with some fabulous bass work that is quickly joined by guitar and drums. Singer/bassist Andrew Goldhawk has a beautiful voice. Vocally, he's like a softer, sweeter version of Geddy Lee (Rush). Goldhawk's bass work is very much in a Geddy Lee vein, too. "Ripple in Time" is a mid-tempo and smooth song. It is in a Rush vein but happier and more upbeat than Rush is generally known for. All four musicians are very good and the song flows along perfectly. The vocal melodies are infectious and beautiful.
2. "Mars Direct" - This is an instrumental very much in a Rush vein. It is a fairly interesting instrumental but it isn't really my thing. Still, Singularity shows that they are capable musicians.
3. "Ebb and Flow" - This track, like number one, can be classified as "happy Rush" though the term disturbs me slightly. Goldhawk's voice is smooth and spacey keyboards are very prominent throughout the song. "Ebb and Flow" has a quirkiness to it that is attractive and fun (yes, it's okay for music to be fun). This is a good, mid-paced song with some amazing vocal melodies. Beautiful vocal melodies do it for me every time. .
4. "Who We Are" - This song is more relaxed than the previous three and the vocal melodies are absolutely gorgeous. Goldhawk's vocals are again stunning. The song shifts gears a few times which shows Singularity's ability to write catchy and complicated songs. Too many so-called progressive bands today have (or have never had) the ability to balance both qualities.
5. "Strange Attraction" - Another quirky, unusual song, "Strange Attraction" is appropriately titled: This song is both quirky and alluring. This is another good song.
6. "Lenses" - This song has many of the same qualities that were present in the previous five tracks: Smooth vocals, pretty vocal melodies and catchy song writing. The only down side to the song is that it is a bit too long and I think it suffers because of this. Still, it isn't bad.
