Reissued 1996 compilation. You can hear their greatest hits on this collection, which includes 28 tracks from the late 60's and early 70's, there's the rare 'Utterly Simple', a song written and produced for Smoke by Traffic's Dave Mason, plus five cuts by the band when the changed their names to Chords Five. Together with various A and B sides of singles like 'Sugar Man' there is also a 1976 updated version of 'My Friend Jack.'

Customer Reviews:
Pleasant British pop/psych, but not essential.......2000-06-23
Formed in Yorkshire, England in 1965, Smoke, led by vocalist Mick rowley and guitarisst Mal Luker, produced a body of pop/psych work which is at once pleasant and yet forgettable. Best known for the track "My Friend Jack" included in original 1967 and late 1976 versions on this compilation by German reissue experts Repertoire Records, Smoke was basically a singles band, who charted only one, with "Jack" (#45 on the British charts). "The Best of Sugar Man" consists of a- and b-sides as well as 4 previously unissued tracks, which turn out to be among the highlights of the set. Much of the material is rather pedestrian pop music, lacking in intensity or creativity. The previously unreleased tracks, "I Wanna Make It With You" "She Put The Hurt On Me" "Magic" and "Like A Good Man Should" have more punch than most of the rest of the tracks and its a shame the band didn't show this side of itself more often, since on the occasions when they did rev up, the results were much more appealing than their typical pop stuff. For Smoke fans this compilation will be all they will ever need, for most others, it is much more than you will want. 3 stars is as far as I can go on this one, and even that may be a bit of a stretch.
