Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AUSTRALIAN & THE BEST.......2006-05-11

"This 20-tracks Australian compilation is truly off-beat and full of surprises, like most of the similar rarities coming from Down Under! 8 of these tracks have Shel Silverstein's name next to them, and again - expect the unexpected!"

"Dr Hook began life as Dr Hook and the Medicine Show, and are one of the few successful groups (the Beatles and Three Dog Night are others) which have more than one lead singer. Ray Sawyer (born in 1937) and Dennis Locorriere (born in 1949) are the two regularly featured lead vocalists, the rest of the band being Rik Francis on keyboards and Jance Carfat on bass."

"Their first hit in Australia was that piece of telephonic agony in conversation with the long-distance operator and Mrs Avery, 'Sylvia's Mother', written by Playboy cartoonist Shel Silverstein, which reached number one in 1972. Silverstein wrote many more songs for Dr Hook, including the very funny 'Cover of Rolling Stone', which was banned from broadcast because it was classed as advertising, and thus flopped totally."

"By 1975, the band had gone bankrupt, but they stuck together (apart from the original drummer, John David, who bailed out) and the hits began to start again. In 1977 Dr hook had their second number one hit in Australia, 'Walk Right In'."
