4 out of 5 stars Blue Guru, the facts for you -.......2004-09-19

Blue Guru is the first of two albums by the Jon Tiven group recorded in the 90s.
First of all I'm not sure what the names Arthur Alexander and Jon Tiven mean following the titles on the Amazon list of songs (above). They aren't composer credits, and they aren't vocal credits. It's just a mistake I guess. The fact is that Alan Merrill sang all lead vocals on all of the songs on both of the Jon Tiven Group albums, "Blue Guru" and "Yes I Ram", and that fact is clear in the liner notes on both records. For those of you who don't know, Merrill is a very under rated and talented vocalist.
The instrumental trio of Jon Tiven (guitar), Sally Tiven (bass) and Todd Snare (drums) are tight, and play with thoughtful simplicity on this recording, leaving plenty of room for the songs to shine.
There are many famous guest musicians appearing too, like Muzz Skilling, Anton Fig, Vernon Reid, Sir Mack Rice, and others.
All of the catchy well crafted songs on this album were written by both Jon and Sally Tiven, with contributions from various co-writers. The best songs on the album for my taste are "I smell smoke", "Better him than me", "He don't know", "Second hand paradise" and "Protection". There is one vocal duet, performed by Arthur Alexander and Alan Merrill, "Let's think about it ", and that is also a standout.
Many of these songs have had subsequent cover versions by well known artists such as BB King, Robert Cray, Huey Lewis, and Freddie Scott.
All in all Blue Guru is a fine showcase for the songwriting talents of Jon and Sally Tiven, and the vocal expertise of Alan Merrill. It is a very well produced rock 'n blues album, and a valuable addition to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good fusion of blues, pop, and R&B, well sung and played........1999-02-16

This album is a meeting ground of strong songwriting, playing, and singing. Jon Tiven's production is crisp and spare allowing all to be heard. He has assembled an interesting array of stellar guests, including Arthur Alexander, John Waite, Eddie Hinton, Muzz Skillings, Spooner Oldham, and Gary U.S. Bonds. Mostly co- written by Jon and Sally Tiven with various other writers (including Don Covay!) the songs are catchy and well structured. The drums of Todd Snare add a sexy pulse to the music. Jon Tiven and his wife Sally, on guitar and bass respectively, create a simple and confident funky sound like a modern Cropper and Dunn. Alan Merrill's lead vocals are emotive, passionate and strong (Merrill had hits as the singer of the Arrows in the 70's) and a standout is his duet with the late Arthur Alexander on "Let's Think About It". For those who don't know he was the singer of the original "I Love Rock 'N Roll" in 1975 (which he also wrote) with the Arrows. Standout tracks are "He Don't Know", "Second Hand Paradise", and "Better Him Than Me".
