Customer Reviews:
These Guys Are Adorable.......2002-04-13
I used to hang out with these guys when we were all young dreamers working at coffee shops in Eugene and almost embarrassed to say we wanted to be famous rock stars someday. Then they moved to Portland and I moved to England and we lost touch. Now I'm back in Eugene, and the other day I was rifling through the "Local Artists" bin at a CD store, when I spied an American Girls cd. I of course bought it, and burning with curiosity, immediately popped it in to my car player. Suddenly I realized that in my absence these guys passed the threshold from college kid wannabe's to the Real Deal. I am so impressed with this album, and so proud to say that "I knew them when...". What tenacity, what vision, what drive they have maintained, to bring them from just jamming around to this level of craftsmanship!! And their live shows are/were amazing as well.
If you like britpop a la Blur, these guys have the vocal stylings, harmonies and chord progressions you crave. If you are an 80s Curehead, they cover that retro turf subtly but deftly, too. However, if you dig a bouncy ska-trumpet fun vibe, these fellows incorporate the trumpet expertly, and it an effective element, breathing life into standard pop tunes. In other words, the American Girls are a hybrid of every great and irresistable musical trend to come along in the past twenty years.
The songs on this album range from ballads to lovelorn british rock to upbeat, peppy pop to slick radio-ready mega hits.
As a girl, I am especially impressed with the way in which Higgins, the singer/lyricist, deals with issues of love, longing and heartache. I remember these guys as always being smitten with girls, in a sweet, boyish way, and these songs are drenched with that sort of sincere, naive longing for love that women feel most men lack. I certainly found these guys to be charming and cute back in the day, and that respectful attitude towards women, that high-school yearing, is still evident. So its refreshing and poignant to hear this stuff.
I hear that they had some label problems which barred them from being marketed as fully as was originally intended, and I am wondering if this will be the last we hear of this tragically talented and underexposed band. So show your support, buy this album and their other releases, and celebrate the life (and death?) of a really, really good Pacific Northwest band. Its an inspiration to Eugenians, Portlanders, and dreamers everywhere.
Why arent more buying this?.......2001-01-07
I believe this band to be a very unique sound. They are rock and jazz and jam all in one and those are the ingredients for a great band. You should serious buy this album NOW NOW NOW!!

"Like the Movies" is classic pop.......2000-06-14
I love this album and this band. I had the pleasure of opening for The American Girls a few months back and they gave me an advance copy. I absolutely fell in love with the record and haven't taken it out of the player since. Well crafted songs, tasteful production...the album is very polished but rough enough to let you know they care. This is a band I hope takes off real soon - they deserve it. Buy this record now and treat yourself to some great stuff.
The Most Romantic Rock 'n' Roll Band Ever.......2000-05-27
I love this album (and this band)! They rock as hard as anyone, but the melodies and the lyrics they write speak of the kind of heartache and longing that everyone can relate to.
The single "Heavy and Struck" is amazing, but my favorite track on the album is "Paranoia" where the singer is telling the love of his life "I can't breath, I can't speak, I can't breath, I can't breath . . . I'm so afraid of you."
