Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars nothingface - changeman.......2002-05-22

The two obvious implications of nothingface's new album's title are as appropriate as irritating: yes, it' s about entering new territory and no, it's not hinted at some historic arcade game, no `return-of-the-80s' or `attack-of-the-pixel' brandnew-you're-retro stuff this time.

With "changeman", nothingface a.k.a. Eric Schneider releases his first vocal album. An overdue enterprise if you ask hearers who have previously noticed that certain catchyesque pop note on his former productions: adding vocals would anyway have been the next logical step. In "Wir marschieren" - a slightly kraftwerkian minipop, nothingface takes that step. Continuing along the tracks with comfortably straight deep house and fake soul, naturally not omitting the typical (but not usual) nothingfacial miniatures, "changeman" perfectly exercises the splits between dancefloor compatibility and hippie-burlesque.

Eric Schneider is the secret outsider of the `Sound of Cologne'. Following his first release on Joerg Burger's legendary label Eat Raw, he passed some very credible stations, namely EMI's re-animated/then-re-buried guinea pig Harvest and small-but-smart German label Treibstoff. This year he debuted on Eleganz with the vinyl-only release of "ultraboutique"-LP.

Vocal support comes from Brit Leisler a.k.a. duft and Chris Garland a.k.a. the nightdoctor who contribute both the calculated coolness (duft) and the explosive soul-weirdness (the nightdoctor) that "changeman" draws its idiosyncratic charm from. discourse not permitted - so love it or leave it!
