A True Billy Joel Masterpiece.......2004-02-26

The album starts out with a bang on "Movin Out (Anthony's Song)", an excellent rock tune about a young man beginning to make his way in the world. What follows is the whistling introduction to my personal favorite song on the album, the title track, which is another great rock song dealing with the very contradictory and often conflicting aspects of human nature. Other great pop/rock tracks include "Only the Good Die Young", which I assume that everyone has heard, and "Get it Right the First Time", which is a great message as well as a pretty solid song.

The album also contains some of Billy Joel's most beloved and touching ballads, and rarely has his piano sounded so sweet as it does on "Just the Way You Are", "She's Always a Woman", and "Vienna". The songwriting is intelligent, reflective, and as always, delivered with the earnestness and humor that have always been his strengths. Always the storyteller, the narrative from his opus "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is simply magnificent, and entirely unforgettable.

Although only 9 tracks in length, 5 of these songs also appear on his Greatest Hits collection and "The Stranger" is probably the single best album to become aquainted with Billy Joel's body of work. Given his abilities, it's no surprise that he has crafted some of the most memorable and best known music from the past thirty years.
