Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Luminous.......2000-09-04

Pressed to choose between two favorites, I'd have to point to '93's "Signal" over Judgment of Paris' earlier release, "Conversion." While "Conversion" stretches thin over 18 (+2 bonus) tracks, some too brief to fully bloom, "Signal's" 9 +4 songs are allowed a more languid pace and demonstrate that JoP had learned quite a bit in the year between.

The music has an old world bend to it, using dulcimers and flutes with electric guitars and drum machines. Fields of shimmering bell tones underscored with waves of plucked string, that kind of thing. All of it delivered with such sincerity it completely evades pretentiousness--though I'm sure those threatened by such honesty will slap it with that label and leave it at that.

Christian Erickson's deep vocals compliment the orchestrations instead of overwhelming them; he submerges himself in the proceedings, allowing the listener to do the same. Don't ask me what the lyrics are; I'm too lost in the lovely atmosphere to perceive those ice-fire vocals in any other than a purely emotional sense.

The album is a continuous work, best listened to from beginning to end. Similar cords and instrumentation are used throughout. Elsewhere, it might be seen as repetitious. Here it works as a genius rhyming device, bringing you forward and backward in the work's progress, creating a luminous space oblivious to the passage of time.
