Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly successful........2005-02-18

From his Henry Cow days, Chris Cutler has always been one of my favourite musicians, but I must admit that I bought this CD more out of curiosity than anything else, never expecting that an entire CD of nothing but electrically treated drums would be one that I would want to listen to very frequently. Well, I was wrong. Rather than being just an interesting experiment, this is totally successful and very satisfying pice of work indeed. True, it contains very little that you might find yourself whistling whilst digging your garden, but it completely engrosses, if you give it a chance. One of a select number of CDs that I expect to still be listening to with interest 40 years from now.

5 out of 5 stars these drums are not like others........2004-09-29

Chris Cutler is an important figure in rock music and modern art music in general. He is more than an excellent drummer. And he is more than an innovative drummer. With this album, he has completely rethought the instrument. It's like when they say it doesn't push the envelope, it throws it in the fire. This is Cutler's first solo release, but the sound isn't really so different from _Quake_, which he did with Thomas DiMuzio. The centerpiece in both cases is a bizarre orgy of improvised, electronically processed sounds from an acoustic kit, creating AMM-channelling drones. The difference is that Cutler does all the electronic alterations himself. I will share some of Chris Cutler's words from the liner notes, which explain the music here:

"There are no samples, pads or triggers, just acoustic drums amplified and modified with standard electronic processors; there's a table with a few tambours, a frying pan and an egg-slicer - also amplified --, a miscellaneous collections of sticks, brushes, screw-rods, beaters, violin bows, battery operated cocktail mixers, some ping pong balls, a fire bell and a massager. All this is run into a small 16 channel mixer and out through various standard pedals and guitar effects. That's it. Whatever you hear on this CD was made from these ingredients in real time, however unlikely that may seem. Occasionally there are snatches of other sounds, either from a Trigon Incantor - a circuit-bent Speak n' Spell modified by inventor Reed Ghazala, or snatches of CDs 00 at concerts I have a CD running silently so I can randomly introduce bursts into the mix . . . You'll notice I have a special fondness for sustained tones, layering and variable pitching; things we drummers miss in our regular instrument. And indeed this hybrid kit grew largely in pursuit of these techniques in an attempt to extend the vocabulary of acoustic percussion into the world of electrification."

I think it is outstanding. Cutler creates impressionistic sonic canvases with complex interactions of natural and modified timbres. The music is strangely colorful and evocative, even with its mechanical, alien qualities. The cd is comprised of three long pieces and two short pieces, assembled so that the album creates a seamless, inexplicable, and wondrous musical trip.

Trust me, you've heard nothing like this before. Highly recommended for music fans who admire those special artists who step over the perceived boundaries, and anyone who likes albums that change the way they think of instruments. Also check out _Quake_ and _Dust_, with Chris Cutler and Thomas DiMuzio.
