This may read like faint praise, but it's not: Nils Lofgren is one of rock & roll's esteemed journeymen. Though championed as a phenom when he emerged with his band Grin in the early '70s (he'd already played on Neil Young's classic After the Gold Rush when he was 19), stardom stubbornly eluded the gifted vocalist/instrumentalist/songwriter as a bandleader and later as a solo artist. Lofgren, however, proved over time to be a splendid lieutenant for some of the leading lights of the '70s and '80s, including Young, Lou Reed, and Bruce Springsteen. He also kept plugging away as a frontman, with relatively little notice. Acoustic Live serves as a nifty career summary for the artist, who recorded this set in 1997, nearly three decades into his recording career. Lofgren sounds anything but drained here as he heartily revisits longtime set staples such as "Keith Don't Go," "Big Tears Fall," and "No Mercy" while mixing in a half-dozen fresh compositions. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful songs, voice, and guitar.......2003-05-01
Wow, I really liked this album. There are some beautiful songs (Black Books, Little On Up), and totally breathtaking guitar work (Keith Don't Go). After listening to samples and getting recommendations from those who already knew how amazing he was, I had to see what it was about. Now I wonder why I never thought Nils was the great talent that he is, maybe because his sound sort of gets lost in the E-street sound. But he is an excellent guitarist, great songwriter, he has it all -- Bruce is so lucky to have him and should definitely showcase his talent more. I'm just sad to know that he has never gotten the recognition he really deserves. But he continues to "shine silently" and his longtime fans are always loyal. Acoustic Live is well worth a listen!
Good not great.......2002-04-11
I think poeple on this list are a little too eager to throw out a five star rating, granted they are all hardcore Lofgren fans so they are a little biased...A good album, a 3.5, not a 5...the lyrics are a little too sappy in most of the songs, which explains why he is relegated to sideman status, his lyrics aren't effective enough...but on the upside, and what makes this album worth purchasing, is the incredible musicianship. There are about 8 beautiful songs on this disc, notably "Blackbooks", "Some Must Dream" and "Little On Up"...some of the most amazing acoustic solos I have ever heard...the production is remarkably crisp and at times the music is breathtaking...but five stars is classic and this effort is a little too spotty to be put up there with albums of the stature of Sticky Fingers and the like...still worth buying...but don't be taken in by the unchecked enthusiasm of this crowd, if you do you will be sadly disappointed...
The best acoustic CD ever released!.......2002-02-20
I admit that I'm a "dyed in the wool" Nils fan; but this is a CD that displays his undoubted talents to the full. Its a performance that grips you from first to last, it deserves major air time. Anybody hearing this will buy it and place it amongst their most treasured possessions. A must for all true music fans!!

I saw Nils recently for both shows at BB Kings place in NYC. I just finished playing this CD while at work. For anyone who appreciates great music, it is a shame if they are not familiar with this acoustic CD, along with the rest of the Nils collection
Just a great album.......2001-07-20
A co-worker and friend of mine literally made me listen to this album about a year and a half ago. I had never heard of Nils Lofgren, but I figured what the hay? Immediately, from the first song 'You', I was hooked. The songwriting coupled with the amazing guitar playing and the great recording of this live performance all add up to creating one the better albums in music.
I have given this album to my fiancee and also to my brother. He made his girlfriend listen to it. Needless to say, all four of us are now huge fans of this album, and are going to see Nils live in Alexandria VA at the beginning of September.
