Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Music Changes, the Quality Remains.......2005-10-16

Gloria's first greatest hits collection had an enjoyable mix of emotional and heartfelt pop ballads and Miami club scene dance songs that was much like listening to the best radio station on the planet. Her second collection of greatest hits reflects the change in radio and the integrity of Gloria and Emilio to the music. As hip-hop and rap began getting more and more airplay, Gloria continued to make great music, finding other venues like films and the Olympics to augment the occasional dance club hit or beautiful ballad. This does make for an eclectic mix of great individual songs, but without the easy flow of the first one.

There are some wonderful songs here, however, and to dismiss it simply because of its variety would be ridiculous. Three new songs were recorded by Gloria as bonus tracks, so you definitely will not get cheated on this one. The flow of this second collection lies in the high quality production given these hits. The same care given Gloria's more artistic Spanish efforts such as "Mi Tierra" and "Alma Caribena" can be found here, each song framed by Emilio's attention to detail. The musical quality of this collection is its flow.

1) Turn the Beat Around (Classic Mix) -- This is Gloria's 'cover' of Vicki Sue Robinson's disco classic. She was seven months pregnant with her daughter Emily when she recorded this song high atop the Miami skyline. A lively and fun blast from the past.

2) Everlasting Love -- Taken from Gloria's album of 'covers' for songs she grew up with, this is a few smoothly produced minutes of pure nostalgia. It will leave you feeling good, and just a little wistful.

3) Reach -- While Diane Warren was helping write Gloria's "Destiny" album, she came up with the title for this song Gloria had been asked to write for the 1996 Summer Olympics. According to Gloria's comments in the liner notes, twenty minutes later she and Warren had wriiten this inspirational and poignant song everyone will remember from the closing ceremonies.

4) If We Were Lovers -- The Spanish version, which is lyrically different than the English version here, was a worldwide hit. The same beautiful melody surrounds this very romantic song of a heart waiting and longing for the moment that love is returned. The quietly exotic feel of this song harks back to the 1940's in flavor and is just amazing. A great song for wine and soft lighting, with someone you love.

5) You'll Be Mine (Party Time-Single Mix) -- No one does this kind of song better than Gloria and Emilio Estefan. A great production turns this dance club party song into glittering images of Miami nightlife. Listening to this song is like watching that opening salvo of images from Miami Vice. This is pink flamingos, sandy beaches, and long-legged girls in short skirts stepping out of hot cars at posh dance clubs.

6) Heaven's What I Feel -- It may be what you feel when listening to this great pop song, perfect for a summer afternoon. It was originally written for Celine Dion, who decided not to include it on the album she was doing. It's hard to imagine it being done any better that Gloria does it here.

7) I'm Not Givin' You Up -- Gloria calls this her 'love at any cost' song and since an uptempo version had not been available as a single, she put the dance mix here. Though faster in tempo than the beautiful slower verion, it loses none of its anguish or melancholy due to Gloria's emotional delivery of the lovely lyrics.

8) Music of My Heart -- This duet with N' Sync from the Meryl Streep film in which Gloria had a role could easily have turned into another forgettable pop tune, but instead is a beautiful and inspirational song conjuring up images of the film it came from.

9) Oye --This is the next best thing to being at an open air Cuban club on a warm summer night. If you've seen the sexy video for this song you'll know why it earned the 'Dance Club Video of 1998 award.

10) You Can't Walk Away From Love -- A very pretty and passionate song better than the film it was written for. The lyrics are emotionally naked and Gloria's vocal delivery of them honest and rich. This song will grow on you.

11) Out of Nowhere -- A terrific and sexy song that feels like Miami as the sun goes down. A joyful song with a fast beat of love found unexpectedly. Sort of a companion to "Everlasting Love."

12) I Got No Love -- The title may tell all, but it doesn't prepare you for the unusually spare and funky rhythm that has a circular feel, turning something simple, into something special.

13) Y-Tu-Conga -- This remix is really nice. Light Latin rhythms surround Gloria's voice, making this 15 year old classic fresh and vibrant. Produced by Gloria's son, this one was special to her, and it shows. After several listenings, this has become my favorite version of this Gloria Estefan staple. African and Cuban rhythms are fused into a fantastic mix of island ambiance. This is bongos and palm trees and drinks with little umbrellas. Wonderful.

There is an emotional honesty in Gloria Estefan's vocals that is missing among the new wave of pop stars. Talent and range are not the same thing as honesty and integrity. There is a reason Gloria Estefan has such a special relationship with her fans and has managed to have such staying power in an industry where a new pop princess comes along every five minutes. That reason can be heard here on this second collection of greatest hits.
