Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer!.......2007-03-10

I've always just loved this womans voice! This is a great cd and I am getting ready to purchase no. 2

If You are a wendy james fan...you won't be dissappointed!

1 out of 5 stars It's obvious all the talent was BEHIND the lead singer in VAMP.......2006-11-15

I loved the Transvision Vamp albums, they were derivative but fun. Wendy's first solo album had a few fun songs as well, despite being one colossal joke at her expense. Then after a long silence Wendy James gives us....THIS? A truly wretched excuse for an album...anyone expecting a "hidden gem" or "unappreciated classic" will be rightfully shocked. Make no mistake, this CD is achingly, painfully, maddeningly, jaw-droppingly awful. Not a guilty pleasure, or so bad it's good, but simply unlistenable.

Anyone rating this CD higher than one star, must clearly be poor Wendy James, logged onto Amazon, under an assumed name.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2006-08-21

amazing that she played all instruments on this and wrote everything. as reviews show, the Uk despised her, unusually so, but her voice, which isnt strong but has a unique style is great for rock an roll. The British review was unusually vicious. I am surprised!
James belongs to the Debbie Harry type of rock and roll singers(the albums not the novelty singels like Tide is high), girls in front of guitar bands from Annabella to Clare Grogan to Tracy Tracy to Shirley Manson to Chrissy Amphlett as opposed to the las vegas non rock pop [...],(with women singing in front of cheesy cookie counter synthesized arrangements or with session guys behind them) that Madonna made famous(like BRitney , Kelly Clarkson & all that junk).Wendy is errouneously grouped with madonna sometimes, not true! old transvision vamp trax like You put a spell on me, Bad Valentine, Right through your head, and Dont believe the hype and This is a test and We despise you on her solo album are great rock and roll. If Blondie albums are your type of music, you will like Racine, if you are looking for madonnamusic forget it.

1 out of 5 stars Oh boy! Got to Disagree........2005-10-28

Isn't it strange that two people can listen to the same album and disagree so violently? Far from being a mis understood classic this album is an exercise in vanity recording and releasing of the worse kind.Pia K is Ms James own invented "label" and she is the sole artist having been dropped by her previous label in 1993 and without ANY record deal for 12 years.
This album is painfully underwritten, underplayed and proves why Ms James is written out of the pop history books permanently and ignored by todays radio and tv stations. It sounds like the sort of rubbish homemade stuff which any 8 year old could cobble together on their computer music software.A series of obviously pre packaged loops and Ms James doing her best sex phoneline moan (dont get too excited she sounds 100% fake and could not turn on a light switch) through some lyrics which are deliberately dense, immature and reek of pretension. This is the sum of this album which she funded herself as a last ditch attempt to make money. After no real label would touch her with a 10 ft bargepole following a series of high profile financial flops, backfired publicity stunts in the early 90's and incredible public loathing.
Ms James ridiculously claimed her long delay (10 years, yes a full decade) since her last high profile stinker(Costello ridiculed her in 1993 remember?and THAT particular album was voted one of the worst of all time by Rolling Stone) was due to her learning to play instruments.Having had no musical skills what so ever when dropped by her previous label by her own admission.Never a requirement for a manufactured popstrel but vital when out in the harsh real world again.
It took her 10 years to learn how to drag and drop a loop in music software did it? More like it really took her 10 years to find a sucker to distribute this crap which tanked in England and got terrible reviews.A planned second single was publically scrapped and the album was been deleted over there for months.
To think we laugh at Kelly Osbourne,Geri Halliwell and Naomi Campbell for releasing huge flop albums which no one wanted and few bought and yet we forget that this so called album sold even LESS than them.Less than Naomi Campbells well know turkey !
If you want a laugh try to catch the famously awful grease monkey video from the only single released so far,in almost a year.Sadly it has been removed from the website to avoid further embarrasement ( a second video was also made when it was realised the first version stank.Amazingly that was pulled after a few days too as it was worse!).It was so bad no one wanted to play it and James looks seriously haggard. She is 40 (yes 40 it has been 17 years since she was in the charts anywhere after all!) and smokes like a chimney.
Creatively stuck somewhere between poor Kelly Osbourne (yes THAT bad really!) outtakes and Ashley Simpson playing at Rock Chick this album cannot be even mentioned in the same breath as the White Album but Rolling Stone can comfortably add it to their worse albums of all time list.Ms James is already on that list in 3 other positions!
This album is NOT being released by a US record company despite being released twice in England (flopping BOTH times in 2004 and 2005)
It has been turned down by iTunes. Several times.
so is not available there either.
Guess why.

5 out of 5 stars Congradulations Wendy James.......2005-10-07

I delayed posting this several days to check some things, relisten to Racine, and find the nerve to say what needs to be said. The insert confirmed what I remembered. "All songs **written**, **played** **arranged** and **mixed** by Wendy James." An impartial musician friend listen to a few tracks and said her ability [with the range of instruments] wasn't bad, and added, he had friends that could do that too. I responded, "on their first album?" He said, "wellllll. . . no." [sansMiliVanili] I SAY, CONGRADULATIONS WJ

I am blown away by this album. It's difficult to believe that a single personality achieved such diversity and excellence across a single album. Racine is like the "white album" in that, each track is unique and "fun." (I'm not saying that Racine is musically like the "while album.") It also has two interesting qualities that are Jim Morrison like. The first is benign. Racine is pure artistry. I am not sure where it fits into the current music scene. However, the second quality is dangerous. The musical punctuation recasts the lyrics. This gives it an ethereal charm that is elusive, deep, cleverly woven. . . It sings of her youth, disappointment, frustration, pain, energy, joie de vivre. . . Finally, I was not disappointed by what I did expect. The vocals are pure WJ. Clearly, Racine is the metamorphosis of a misunderstood talent and betrays the existence of a brilliant mind. WJ didn't know... You can bet the days before WJ committed herself to doing Racine were filled a sense of unfairness, horrible emotional pain and tears. However, what a moment it must have been when WJ finally found "itso". Perhaps insights from Sir J M Berrie can bring comfort to those who have difficulty with this. Copywrite 2005
