Customer Reviews:
scraping something.......2005-01-21
um, not so much. there's no real music to be found here. lots of pieces of music, lots of bad (really bad) solo stuff from the guys that sounds like the worst of cheesed out eighties rock and some sound files. oh, there's two pretty good concerts (kinda--one of them is actually the rehearsal before a concert so no audience) on the data disc, but that hardly justifies the sixty to eighty dollars you're going to spend. the booklet isn't even that good. i love gentle giant, they're one of my favorites of the prog scene, but i'm going to be selling this soon.
GENTLE ON MY MIND.......2005-01-09
If anything, the work of Gentle Giant continues to grow in stature. During the 1970s they may have seemed marginalized, especially to U.S. audiences, by the then more popular successes of Yes, King Crimson and Genesis, to name just some of the peer group. Yet, there was always something distinctive about Gentle Giant. Their music demanded some greater effort on the part of the listener. They were rarely, if ever, too flashy or too showy. Their writing and performing seemed so precise, so absolute that it was hard to imagine anything that the music was lacking, or that anything could be added. They managed a sort of off-balance balance, if there is such a thing.
"Scraping the Barrel" is an honest enough name. Had this collection of outs and fragments been released a few years after Gentle Giant disbanded it would have seemed to be almost useless. But given the distance of some thirty years, it comes across as a compelling and important document. But, again, you must make adjustments as a listener.
Like "Under Construction" but on a grander, more obsessive scale, "Scraping the Barrel" is a technical marvel that needs to be approached with an interest in two things that are atypical in most people's way of listening to recorded music. The first is an interest in process, in the way in which music is approached by the composer. By getting a snippet of vocal work here, the development of a bass line there, the music Gentle Giant listeners are familiar with begins to take shape over multiple takes and variations. It's not as boring or academic as it might seem because if the music of Gentle Giant shares one overriding characteristic, it is the characteristic of tightly enmeshed, mutually dependent parts. Hearing some of the parts free of their surroundings adds an immense sense of appreciation to what you already know of the finished work.
The second is an interest in cataloging. Any music that even brushes the world of pop is usually deemed disposable, along with the circumstances of its creation. Back catalogs can be messy, especially for a group that was dogged by contract and label issues during most of its career. Here, the history gets un-blurred. "Scraping the Barrel" and the earlier "Under Construction" put all the band's work in context and in perspective. And the addition of extensive downloadable samples do a nice job of projecting Gentle Giant into a new sort of future, while being let in on the process of their composition and recording adds yet another layer of detail on to their remarkable studio work.
Not for everyone, but definitely for everyone that cares about this music.
Approach with caution..........2004-12-24
Made in UK in 2004, Serial# ALUGG-04, Playing Time 748:14
That's right: about 12 and a half hours of audio content !!!
So forgive me for not listening to this set 3 or 4 times before posting this review (that's usually what I do before forming an opinion...)
The GG die-hard fan out there is already familiar with the concept used to make this album: for those of us owning "Under Construction", this 4 disc collection is an extension (and a HUGE one!) of quite an array of "writing" sessions, demos, and various snippets of GG tracks; there is (proportionally) very little finished material herein... this is NOT a 'best of' or anything of the sort.
A brief summary of what's found here? Disc 1 (33 tracks!) contains, for the most part, what they refer to as "Vocal Mix" pieces, a sort of "vocal track" only, with the music barely audible in the background (possibly spilling from the headphones into the microphone when recording the voices); or just the piano track when recording the song...
Disc 2 (25 tracks) is a bit more interesting as it continues the strategy of disc 1, but also contains some demos: many tracks last more than 2 minutes ?!?
Disc 3 (21 tracks) is, in my opinion, the most interesting musically as it contains "solo" material, but those are actually "songs", and not just "snippets" of songs. An interesting exploration covering very early to post-GG material.
Disc 4 (215 (yes 215) audio tracks) is a "data disc": it will NOT play in a CD player, and contains a plethora of files that you need to play in your PC; and is made up of basically 4 sections:
a) photos/videos/home movies/song lyrics,
b) more "under construction" material,
c) some concert material from Plymouth and Torino (those of you who have "In a Palesport House" will be impressed here: there's been some serious clean-up of those recordings and are a VERY welcome addition to your collection), as well as a concert rehearsal recorded in Elstree. And last, but certainly not least,
d) a "sample" file, made up of 94 (!) snippets.
Pretty tough to sum up all that's on here, other than it's NOT the type of CD where you just "push play" !
This is for the die-hard fan, and has very uneven interest: but hey, even "ups-and-downs" still mean it they have "ups".
The booklet contains some comments from the band members, and the most memorable to me will remain the one describing what could be the next release: the possibility of putting together tape hiss + stuff that ended up on the editing floor of the recording studio, and calling the whole thing "Acquiring The Waste".
