For the price currently listed ($6.98) this short live set entitled "Extended Versions" is alright by me. The ten cuts are played in just under 40 minutes which, coming from one of the founding fathers of progrock, would have been barely enough time for them to develop a theme with two or three of their more adventurous offerings from their heyday. Alas, this is a live show from post-"Works" ELP and consists mainly of songs from that portion of their career.
As has already been stated in other reviews, this may actually be an abbreviated version of the King Biscuit "Greatest Hits Live" disc. I don't own that product so I cannot say. What I can say is that the tracks on "Extended Versions" are in a different order than they are on the King Biscuit product and are presented as if they are being played in their natural order (i.e. as they might have been played in concert) without any obvious edits. The crowd noise leading from one song to the next doesn't fade in and out or show any evidence of splicing where uneven recording levels can usually be detected. This means that extra care must have been taken to provide the listener with a continuous, more realistic concert experience on the "Extended Versions" disc assuming that this is actually an abbreviated, re-ordered version of "Greatest Hits Live". This is a real plus in my opinion as nothing kills the illusion of being at the concert more than to hear a track faded out as the crowd is applauding only to have the crowd noise faded back in prior to the beginning of the next track. You wonder if the tracks even came from the same performance when that happens (at least I do).
The set list and times on "Extended Versions" are as follows:
Introduction/Peter Gunn Theme (3:44)
Tiger in the Spotlight (4:04)
The Enemy God (2:43)
Still, You Turn Me On (3:02)
Lucky Man (2:59)
Watching Over You (4:02)
Fanfare for the Common Man (8:12)
Hoe Down (4:10)
Piano Improvisation (5:30)
Maple Leaf Rag (1:27)
I freely confess that I became a huge ELP fan in my early teens just months after Brain Salad Surgery was released. I worked my way back through their catalog and eagerly awaited their future releases. The triple live album "Welcome Back ..." from 1974 was an excellent (albeit very expensive) next step. When the two "Works" releases came out in the late seventies I was somewhat disappointed. There were certainly some very good tunes on these albums but the magic was mostly missing for me. So, this bargain priced live set provides just the right amount of "Works" for me and I do truly enjoy it much more than I thought I would. If I'm not careful though I might even be influenced to invest in CD versions of the actual "Works" discs themselves to replace my old vinyl copies, something I didn't think was possible before.
Recommended if you want a taste of "Works" era ELP recorded live at a budget price. Owners of the King Biscuit live release and/or "Works Live" probably should pass on this unless you want more of the same.
Product, product, product...........2005-01-30
If ever there was a "worst of" disc, this would have to be it. Who is putting this stuff out and, more importantly, who is spending their hard earned money to buy it? Washed up, burned out, needy, greedy. Sad to say, this band was one of my favorites in the 70's.
A waste of money -- even for ELP fans.......2001-05-16
The only things "extended" with regard to this CD are the noses of the executives who are trying to repackage old tracks as if they are new. They aren't; these are all retreads, and pretty bald & deflated retreads at that. If you've got the King Biscuit Flower Hour ELP CD, then you've heard all this before, verbatim. "Extended Versions" is also similar to the far superior "Works Live" CD, but lacks the orchestra -- and the aural impact.
I remember first hearing these very same tracks on a "bootleg" LP back in the late 70's, so there was no joy in purchasing the King Biscuit CD and hearing them again ... and even less joy when I foolishly purchased "Extended Versions" hoping for something new. If you've heard "Works Live", save your money on this one. Maybe if nobody buys this useless little CD, Rhino execs will dig a little deeper into their archives & look for something original -- live concerts by Emerson, Lake & Powell, for instance, or by 3. One can hope ...
Nothing really new with this ELP release:.......2000-11-06
Although the low price looks enticing, this ELP compilation set really doesn't present anything incredibly outstanding. Most of these extended tracks can be heard on the 1974 "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends" concert disc. I just bought this special edition album, and "Piano Improvisations" by Keith Emerson, a highly allegro version of his "Piano Concierto #1" from "Works Vol. I", was the only track that made this set worthwhile.
Buy at your own risk...
