Wakeman sampler circa 1982-1998.......2005-04-22
Decent 2cd compiliation probably best suited for those interested in a relatively inexpensive (i paid $3.50 for a mint copy used, including S&H!!!) sampling of Rick Wakeman's work between 1982-1998.
Twelve albums and the a/b sides of a 1994 single are examined, not to any great extent with 1 track each selected from 6 of 'em, and 2 each from the remaining 6...for a total of 20 (2 are live frm 1994).
Cd #1 clocks in at 56:44, cd #2 at 59:04...TT= 115:48
For the sake of consistancy within the various "moods" offered, I felt those 4 albums with the better representation to be the most interesting and perhaps worth considering for purchase later. Those separate cd's are 'ROCK'n ROLL PROPHET' (1982), 'ZODIAC'(1988), 'LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH' (1994), 'TAPESTRIES' (1996),'NO EXPENSE SPARED' (1994), and 'ROMANCE OF THE VICTORIAN AGE' (1994).
The title of this 1999 release, 'THE MASTERS' has nothing to do with the tape reproduction, rather it speaks of the artistic genius of Wakeman himself and his musical peers, whomever that might be.
The appreciation of Wakeman's music here is very subjective for me. Of the 20 tracks only 4 contain vocals so I had to rely on associations with the music to the track title for "relationship" (as a rule I'm grounded in lyricism). I suppose I could add that it helps to have some kinda "new age music" orientation for full appreciation (as well as classical) though I do NOT consider Rick Wakeman's music to be "New Age-ish" per se.
The sound quality is terrific on this remastered offering, with various "styles" swirling through in the most unexpected places. Wether it be the carnival-calliope waltz on the track 'VIRGO' (of all places); the jazzy flourish of 'GEMENI' or the celtic flaire of 'THE BEAR' and 'FREMIET'S CAT'...Wakeman is a talented enigma for me and on most tracks remains a true "master" of his art.
a "Follow-up" compilation.......2004-08-02
I wouldn't like to say this is the best compilation as there are other great ones as "Voyage" or "Recollections".
But is definitelly a great one.
I'd like to start with "Light Up The Sky". This is a great song that you won't be able to get anywhere else as it
was originally released as a single. ("The Bear" is another song from that single).
I would describe it more as a "modern" compilation as it doesn't contain songs from
the 70s ("Wives" & "Merlin" are live versions). This compilation covers the period of 1985-1998.
This would be like a follow-up to "Voyage".
It has songs from 12 diffrent albums & the "Light Up The Sky" single.
Something I found very strange is that the booklet has a nice introduction by Bryan Adams.
Short on essence.......2001-09-15
This 2-CD offering should have been condensed into one. Many of the songs sound the same, and while good technically, they are somewhat mechanical, lacking soul, energy, essence. Other Wakeman efforts, both as a solist and with Yes, have these qualities, even in the quiet moments, but they are lacking in many of the songs here. Particularly galling are the liner notes which slam Yes' double album from the 1970's, "Tales From Topographic Oceans". Wakeman's dislike for "Tales" is well-documented, but many fans consider it to be one of Yes' most original and complelling works. Is it really necessary to trash it 25 years later?
This is not what I was expecting from a CD titled "The Masters".
Great introduction to Wakemans universe.......2000-04-09
Having got Wakemans Criminal Record I was delighted to find this fair-priced compilation. This album shows the different sides of Wakemans music. From intimate piano pieces to virtous synth solos. Even though there isn't as much depth and atmosphere in the music as say, Jarre and Pickford it has something neither of the two other has. Virtousity! Wakeman is a true master of the piano and he isn't afraid to let us know! Most pieces feature Listz speed solos and that is something that is rarely heard in Electronic music.
This album has opened a door two a new musical universe for me. Even though many of the tracks have the same "feel" it is still worth every dollar. If you're a fan of electronic/instrumental music you owe it to yourself to listen to it
