Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Heavenly Toast on the Paradise Road - excellent variety!.......2000-06-21

First off...if you only know Nigel through Bush and expect HT to sound remotely like his band...you'll be surprised.

I could tell by listening that Heavenly Toast is a compilation of sorts from songs written and performed at different times, though this fact doesn't take anything away from the album as a whole. It reminds me of the "demo tapes" a lot of budding songwriters make, of melodies and beats inspired by different things and almost haphazardly pasted together. Only Nigel's musical talent is obviously well more along than any budding songwriters.

The album carries the listener through everything from dark, dank riffs and threatening lyrics to a humerous tribute to the Pixies. Nigel Pulsford's musical range is impressive - his album covers many genres yet does them all quite well.

My personal favorite is Youth Is All the Rage, for a number of reasons. For one, it's probably the most radio-friendly of the album (not like that's always a great thing), and it's also an honest, only halfway joking portrayal of a "generation x" that seems to cover today's teenagers through adults still trying to get used to adulthood. I personally also enjoyed the dulcimer and Jew's harp's appearances - they add an original flavor to a few of the album's songs, blending Nashville with "rock" quite satisfactorally.

All in all: a varied yet solid album that surprises and impresses with its originality. Mr. Pulsford should be congratulated - not many closet songwriters are bold (and talented) enough to release a successful album.
