Customer Reviews:
Punk-grunge rock makes a comeback.......2003-07-31
Can you imagine an album that sounds like a mix of Hole's Live Through This and Nirvana's Bleach? Probably not, huh. I first heard Sullen when they opened for Local H months ago. Despite numerous technical problems and a few drunken hecklers, Sullen managed to impress me enough to buy Paint The Moon. Although songs like "All Fall Down" and "War Forges On" are excellent grunge-punk tracks, the overall feel of this album becomes rather repetitive and the music stays pretty much the same. For example, songs like "Lilita" and "Working Man" are zilch compared to the aforementioned two. The duo of Justin Slazinik and Shanna Kiel (she sung on Local H's "5th Ave. Crazy") on vocals proves to be a notable male/female frontline that seems to carry the entire album. And it really stands out on "All Fall Down" especially. But remember... Sullen is not The White Stripes. The lyrics in most of their songs are in the vein of either teenage angst or adulthood; it sometimes seems as if the members are struggling to mature, both as humans and musicians respectively. That can be condoled since they are all working very hard to emerge in a genre that is, seemingly, dead: the punk-grunge rock genre.
Paint The Moon definitely shows promise. And seeing as they decided to remaster and re-release it with two new tracks ("Watch That Girl", "No Sleep"), they are obviously headed in the right direction. With a new label--Thick Records--and the support of their friends in Local H (Scott Lucas has said Sullen was his favorite band), Sullen looks to reinstate the lost art of making true punk-grunge music. But they need your support as well. Take a listen to the 30 second samples above and decide for yourself. This album is not perfect, but it's certainly worth checking out.
