5 out of 5 stars What? You DON'T Have This CD?.......2003-11-28

FANTASTIC! Frontman of one of the greatest bands on earth, New Model Army, Justin Sullivan has really outdone himself with this work of art. I admit, I didn't expect what I heard when I first played the cd BUT I was very, very pleasantly surprised. This is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard! It's soothing and yet it's powerful. I could not possibly do this release justice with my words. Try this masterpiece! Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Sullivans travels.......2003-10-21

Quite simply this is a stunner from new model army's frontman/singer/songwriter that takes sullivans slower material from nma and improves greatly upon it. A concept album of sorts-dealing with themes relating to the ocean, of loss and acceptance, all played and produced beautifully. Slow but not boring this could draw some comparisons to nick cave's boatmans call or the bunnymens ocean rain. Longtime fans of NMA know of Sullivans ability to write a haunting acoustic ballad-but with the help of jazz/country and classical musicians this is a must have. highlights include twilights home/caravan/ocean rising/ and ghost train (which would make johnny cash proud). Theres a sparse open sound dominated by the acoustic guitar and justins voice with truly beautiful orchestration(including mark felthams harmonica). The production is also a career milestone-full and rich-the album does wash over you as others have described. Is it possible that Sullivan is the new Nick Drake? For fans this is a must have-for those who have never heard of NMA-this is still a must have-one of the best albums released this year.

5 out of 5 stars David Gray meets Leonard Cohen. Wonderfful.......2003-05-22

I was a fan of New Model Army in my younger days. Never did I think Justin Sullivan would come up with something like this, so unlike New Model Army. It has a kind of mellow anxiety about it. It flows over you like a crashing wave. Hardly any drums on this album and surprisingly less guitar orientated than I would have expected. Lots of lush keyboards. Bloody amazing. If you liked Justin Sullivan and Dave Blomberg's 'Big Guitars over Little Europe' you'll love this. Also if you like Leonard Cohen or would prefer to listen to David Gray without the drum machine this ablum is for you. *************

5 out of 5 stars Justin Does It Again.......2003-03-19

Justin Sullivan (frontman and backbone of the New Model Army) is, without a doubt, one of the most talented songwriters/musicians/vocalists in the history of rock and roll. While I'd expect only Army fans would bother to punch up this album for purchase, maybe this review will help generate sales for a man who truly deserves critical and commercial success.

"Navigating the Stars" is not a New Model Army album. Simply put, after 20-plus years of making phenomenal music, Justin has penned a haunting if mellow voyage through life that is driven by his trademarks: great lyrics, haunting vocals, and great guitar and scoring.

While "Stars" may lack horsepower, Justin effortlessly breathes life into the things that make us all human: Our longing for adventure. Our fondness for home. Our missing old friends, our longing for lost love. The beauty of our world. Our material success, our failure to be successful, our wanting to fit in. Our inability to be satisfied with things as they are, and the futility of trying to relive our past, no matter how ideal it may seem.

Fittingly, "Stars" is a concept album, a voyage on the high seas of life. Together, we're mates with a modern-day Ulysses, a man on a quest unknown but to a select few of us who know and love him. While it is an honor to accompany our Ulysses, being true friends, none of us have the heart to tell the captain you can't really obtain what he's looking for without losing all that you hold dear. Only at the end of the voyage ("Apocalypse Dream"), with most of his crew "dead or deserted," does our hero realize what we've known all along.

Regarding the songs, "Ocean Rising" is a slowly building symphony of crashing sound which invokes images of man's battle against the sea -- and is representative of everything that makes Sullivan great. "Tales of the Road," with its harmonica-driven riffs, is irresistably haunting and would make all but the coldest heart long for the chance, no matter now fleeting, to spend an evening with friends long forgotten.

"Sun on Water" is the closest we'll ever hear Sullivan approach lounge -- the piano and horn come in just the right increments, and the song sounds as if it was made for a soundtrack. He then effortlessly switches tempo in "Ghost Train," an accoustic jaunt (yes jaunt!) with death which reminds us all of our limited time in this world. "Home" is Sullivan at his edgy best, combining powerful vocals, edgy guitar and harmonica in a hard-biting commentary on falling on hard times and the need for kindness from strangers.
