Can - 'Soundtracks' (Mute).......2006-04-07
Originally released in 1970,as 'Soundtracks' was Can's follow-up to their debut record 'Monster Movie'(see my review).First Can record with vocalist Damo Suzuki, although frontman Malcolm Mooney appears on the two short takes here of "Deadlock".Always forget about the fact that this CD reissue really IS an actual collection of movie soundtracks. My two favorites on this disc are the fourteen minute epic,a true Can signature tune "Mother Sky"(check out the live version on Damo Suzuki's Network-'Seattle' 2-CD)and "She Brings The Rain".Good German progressive to fully taken it.A should-have.
Some of these reviewers are clueless...........2004-12-05
First off, Damo is on most of these tracks. Malcolm is on only two short ones (so it's no big deal if you don't like him (I don't)). The Damo tracks are so strong....a little shorter than usual, except for ' Mother Sky' which is just a sick freakout. Get this.
"If you really want me, if you really need me . . ........2002-10-13
. . . don't turn on the light, leave me alone!" I love that line and it's from my favorite track from this album, next to the sprawling "Mother Sky." What a great quirky song and what a groove. It's even got wierd "Call of the Wild" spaghetti western style keyboard fills.
"Mother Sky," however, is most definately the centerpiece of SOUNDTRACKS. It jumps out of the gate with a bang and takes the listener on a roller-coaster ride of wild twists and turns for nearly 15 minutes. This all out jam improvisation was edited and pieced together by studio genius Holger Czukay (also the bassist). This track also serves as a precursor to the extended jams on their masterpiece TAGO MAGO (along with "Yoo Do Right" from their first album MONSTER MOVIE).
While I prefer the vocal stylings of Damo Suzuki to Malcolm Mooney, Michael really gets into it on "Soul Desert," a churning, laid back groove. The only song I don't care much for is the closer "She Brings the Rain," a slow, sort of old-school jazz number. It's simplistic and so are the lyrics, but it's certainly not a bad song - just a question of taste.
None of the members of Can are exactly what one would call virtuosos (except for the phenomenal drummer Jaki Liebezeit), but when they came together they made magic. Their forte was the BEAT and the manipulation of it. They actually had a subtle yet tremendous influence on music. People get amazed all the time when they check out old Can records and recognize their impact on today's music.
Better than I expected.......2001-06-19
Early Can is tricky business - most everyone gets turned away by the hissy sound and the general abrasivenness. These qualities become bonus points after a few listens, however. But this is not what Soundtracks are about. I was surprised by the calmness on this record. Most tracks are slower and more quiet, but still recognizably Cannish. 'Deadlock' is a bit drony, but 'Don't Turn On The Light...' is reminiscent of 'Bring Me Coffee Or Tea', and cut to just the right length. 'Soul Desert', with Malcolm on vox, is a metronomic groove giving any hip-hop act a run for their money. 'Mother Sky' begins (and often sounds like) a typical 70's freak-out, with Karoli's gtr not fitting the band's groove perfectly, but Damo's vocals and Holger's bassline make it worth the track length. A previous reviewer is mistaken in his vox identification - Damo sings 'Mother Sky', while Malcolm does the amazing what-do-i-care-if-it-doesn't-sound-like-Can slowdance 'She Brings The Rain' All in all, a mixed bag - not quality-wise, but concept-wise. It's a compilation after all. If you're not familiar with Can, it's ok if you pick out only parts of this album that you like. For Can afficionados, you just gotta hear Damo and Malcolm on one release.
Worth Getting.......2001-05-03
...And the biggest reason this is worth getting is the full-length version of "Mother Sky". The track is brutally aggressive, and reminiscent of the Velvet Underground at their most straight-ahead. The instrumental interplay, the rhythms and sonorities that develop, are extremely powerful.
