Album Description

ATOLL is one of the most renowned Seventies French Progressive rock bands, if not one of the best. Singer André BALZER, drummer extraordinaire Alain GOZZO and their colleagues display a music both complex and very elaborated, with sophisticated arrangements and constant melodic research. Recorded in 1974, "Musiciens-Magiciens" reveals itself as a great debut album. Undeniable masterpiece of the band, "L'Araignée-Mal" (1975) saw the arrivals of the talented guitar player Christian BEYA and a violinist obviously influenced by Jean-Luc PONTY. The two keyboards players know perfectly how to use their Mellotrons and Moogs with accuracy, into varied and tricky compositions. This opus is the most ambitious piece of work ever made by ATOLL, recorded as the band was at the peak of its form. The inspired and masterfully played jazz-rock of "Cazotte n°2" is the perfect counterpart of two long tracks filled with lyricism. And watch out for the conceptual title-track clocking at twenty minutes ! The whole puts ATOLL besides YES or KING CRIMSON for musical sophistication, as well as THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA. An impressive calling card, isn't it ? The four first ATOLL studio albums are now reissued by the Musea label in Digipack format, reproducing the original vinyl cover.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fantastic musical trip.......2007-03-09

What a complex and intriguing album! This is a french prog rock masterpiece, full of passion, tempo changes and ideas. Everytime you listen to this record you grab something new from its musical magma, a real wall of sound in perfect 70's prog rock style. That doesn't mean Atoll is just an early copy of Genesis or Yes: this group has its own brand, blending rock and poetry, rythm and melody in an ever changing and surprising balance. I recommend this album to all prog fans.

4 out of 5 stars This is their best stuff!!.......2005-04-09

It's one of the best French prog albums ever made...sometimes their style is different, closer to Mahavishnu Orchestra, but in the other circumstances their standard prog is "aligned" with the same impact, as within the albums by Ange and the other best Romantic Prog Bands!Well honestly I don't get crazy for their hystrionic vocals, neverthless I recognize their personal and very interesting approach inside their experimental music passages, reminding me sometimes of the fusion style by Arti& Mestieri!!For instance the track Cazotte no 1 is different, in comparison to the music "clichè" within the progressive rock scene at that time, but also the other tracks are excellent and complete this good work...well check it out at least!!
