The Q, an institution on the live circuit, have been playing rootsy rock & roll for over 30 years and have put out many documents of their shows. This one is compiled from performances broadcast on the Mountain Stage radio program and captures the full range of their eclecticism. The disc contains classics and rarities, nine with songwriter and guitarist Al Anderson, the other four with his successor, Johnny Spampinato. The highlights include Anderson's perky pop confections "Little Floater" and "Crazy Like a Fox" and a cover of Carl Perkins's "Tennessee." The producers have also seen fit to include the ersatz cabaret of "Our Day Will Come." This and the stripper music of "What A Nice Way to Go" may have been funny on the night they were performed but will wear thin very quickly on repeated plays. --Rob Stewart

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Alas, Too Short For Five Stars.......2002-07-24

This is a great collection of NRBQ performances from the "Live from Mountain Stage" radio show. As per the title of this critique, my only complaint is that it is way too short. Anyone who has witnessed NRBQ live knows that they tear through most songs in 2 or 3 minutes, so this 12-song disc could've easily been twice as long and the liner notes suggest that the Mountain Stage archive had much more material to choose from.

The first 8 songs are from the Al Anderson era and the last 4 feature Johnny Spampinato on guitar. The liner notes do not include recording dates which I think most NRBQ fans would be interested in.

The collection features plenty of great sounding versions of NRBQ classics including "Don't She Look Good," "12 Bar Blues" and "Yes, Yes, Yes." More obscure cuts include Al's "What A Nice Way To Go" and a surprisingly sincere rendition of "Our Day Will Come."
