Customer Reviews:
Ram - 'Where? In Conclusion' (Akarma).......2006-07-01
Originally released in 1972,not exactly sure just how many lp's this 'heavy progressive' rock&roll New York band had put out.One source informed me this may've been their sole effort.Couldn't find out much info about them online,as it is.Most impressive cuts here are "Stoned Silence",the complex "Odyssey" and the twenty-one minute epic "Aza".Really dug their semi-Tull like flute playing through out much of the five track disc.I've never even heard of this band, title or CD until here recently when a friend lent me his copy.Line-up:Ralph DeMartino-guitar&vocals,John DeMartino-flute,sax&clarinet,Michael Rodriguez-bass&vocals and Steeler-drums.Might appeal to fans of Vanilla Fudge,Atomic Rooster,Traffic or King Crimson.A rather nice find.
Wonderful lost gem of heavy progressive rock.......2006-03-29
Ram was one of those prog rock bands that released one album and then disappeared. This New York band's one and only album, Where? (In Conclusion) in 1972 on Polydor. The original LP isn't exactly easy to come by, but however you obtain it, be it LP or the CD reissue (I was lucky to acquire the original LP), it's really worth it. The group consisted of saxist/flautist John DeMartino, guitarist/vocalist Ralph DeMartino (presumably John's brother), bassist/vocalist Michael Rodriguez, and drummer Steeler, with help from Dennis Carbone on keyboards (piano, organ, vocals). This group had a lot of blues and hard rock tendencies, most demonstrated on "The Want in You" and "Mother's Day Song", while a song like "Odyssey" is by far the most traditional prog rock number, dominated by John DeMartino's flute and Dennis Carbone's piano. John DeMartino often plays electronically treated wind instruments from some truly unique sounds. "Stoned Silence" is certainly one of the album's many highlights, with strong psychedelic overtones. I really love that piano and Mellotron passage in the middle part. Then you have the side-length "Aza", which some space rock tendencies, and strange use of electronic, with lots of heavy guitar riffs from Ralph DeMartino. The American prog rock scene obviously started late, many other bands didn't see their debuts released until the mid to late '70s, and of course only Kansas having major AOR success, so Ram obviously had an early start (so did Ram's New York locals, Sweet Smoke, but those guys moved to Germany and recorded their albums there). The blues and hard rock tendencies of Ram might not be to every proghead's taste, the bluesy passages tend to remind me of the Canadian/British group May Blitz, but elsewhere I often get reminded of a little of Van der Graaf Generator or Jethro Tull (especially the Ian Anderson-like flutes on "The Want in You"). Truly an album worth having!
Good then, Good now!.......2005-09-28
I heard this music when it first came out in the 70's and liked them then and I am still a fan of their music today.
