AbsolutePunk.net Review For: A Day In Black & White - Notes.......2005-12-31
Hailing from the musically steeped-in-tradition Washington D.C., arguably the birthplace of hardcore and post-hardcore/post-punk, A Day in Black & White doesn't stray too far from the trail their predecessors in Fugazi and Jawbox blazed, incorporating raw, jangly guitars reminiscent of Sonic Youth, somewhat "talked" and shouted vocals (think a less dynamic mewithoutYou), and thick, jagged percussion on their debut full length, Notes. Songs such as the layered, crushingly climactic "A Literal Title" and the intertwining, tom-heavy "Lame Duck" reveal the band's obsession with Sonic Youth, while "All Plots" sees the band foraging, in more-dare I say emo?-territory. Perhaps emo isn't the word, even in the traditional sense, but the track is definitely more melodic and a little more accessible than most of the album (the devastating, explosive, screeching ending is a treat).
Perfect production courtesy of Kurt Ballou (Converge) helps the release immensely: the thick, yet pristine, drums take their rightful place in the front, while the biting, lightly distorted guitars bring just the right attitude. In general, there's not much to complain about with this release, unless you're simply not a fan of post-punk. Yeah, it's been done before, many times (and a little better), but it's good to see a band like A Day in Black & White carrying the torch; they're not redefining the genre, but they're helping to maintain its good reputation. Pick up Notes if you're into Fugazi, Sonic Youth, or even some of the indie rock that's out there, as the album, although adhering strongly to the "rules" of post-punk, might indeed appeal to the ever-growing indie population.
