5 out of 5 stars Excellent post-punk/hardcore band.......2006-03-25

Everything has already been said here. Yes, it sounds similar to groups ranging from Jesus Lizard to Birthday Party to Rapeman. What makes it more interesting and unique, as already pointed out, is its appropriation of jazz styles (specifically miles davis style fusion and free jazz). I just want to stress and re-emphasize what a great record this is. Perhaps its still new to me, but I would rather hear this record than any of the bands typically mentioned in comparison. (now don't get upset by this statement - its just that its very fresh and relatively new and needs to be heard) And even if you don't particularly like any of the above bands, check this out. I have a friend who is an obsessive Fugazi fan and he found certain aspects of this record to be undeniably good. Maybe I'm being a little rash - but I gotta give this record 4.5/5.0 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-10-06

I picked this up on a whim. The best way I can describe it is if Jesus Lizard were to try to play jazz/become a jam band. There's some interesting songs here and they cover a wide range of styles. I really like the song "sassy" personally. There isn't much structure to the songs (ie it's very far from your typical verse/chorus pop progression) so approach with an open mind. Interesting album overall.

4 out of 5 stars Percussion heavy.......2004-11-25

I read a couple of reviews of this title before downloading it back in 2002. (yes, I've since bought it, but it wasn't available to me before). I'd have to agree with those who compared this to Miles Davis in it's experimentalism, although I don't count myself as a huge Miles fan. Especially troubling, to the degree to which a review from an "intellectually superior" teen can be troubling, was Kel's review below. It's obvious that this album didn't resonate with her, but all her critical ambitions went out the window when I tracked down her GLOWING dashboard confessional review (and an even more HILARIOUS one for one of ann coulter's "books" - i wouldn't wish a marraige to her on my worst enemy).
What really stands out on this album is the ever present, yet varied use of percussion - and even some brass instruments. Most tunes are a bit jagged and disjointed upon first listen, but the improvisational themes begin to reveal themselves upon repeated listens. I don't think this album was rehearsed in the traditional sense. Don't get me wrong, these are some tight, throbbing arrangements, but they manage to feel more "free-form" than other current recording artists in the same vein. I agree with a previous reviewer regarding his comparisons to McLusky. The attitude comes through as strongly as the musical virtuosity. In conclusion: disregard the negative reviews from the kids who probably pirated a couple of the songs from the internets( - there are two of them, right ann?) and dig on the brash staccato rythms.

4 out of 5 stars not ready to give this 5 stars just yet, but...........2004-04-05

Okay, I'm an old fart, so I don't know all the current bands that one would compare Giddy Motors too. I will instead compare them to great bands from my youth.

And in my opinion, Giddy Motors will definitely please fans of the Birthday Party, Scratch Acid, Jesus Lizard, the Pixies, Big Black and others of that ilk.

They have that same sensual muscularity, the bone crushing heaviness underneath, the yowling cathartic vocals on top, and layers of scabrous, noisy guitars doing all sorts of fun things all over the place.

In rock terminology, Giddy Motors kick some arse. These dudes are on a musical rampage, pillaging and swilling beer as they go. But it's not just all full-bore intensity. Like the afore-mentioned bands, what sets Giddy Motors apart is their total command of DYNAMICS. And these guys are musicians with a capital M. I know they and their fans might vomit at the comparison, but Giddy Motors at times remind me of "Red"-era King Crimson. There is true musical intricacy and instrumental finesse underlying the pummeling aggressiveness of their music. Like Crimson, Giddy Motors exhibit an appreciation of the rythmic complexity and improvisatory freedom of jazz. Check out "Cranium Crux" and/or "Hit Cap" to see what I mean.

So, yeah, I am really enjoying this album a lot. And if you like the bands I mentioned above, do yourself a favor and grab this one.
