Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums, ever........2006-07-18

OK people, I'm very, very versed in a many different genres of music, and frankly I'm not generally not into "coffee house music" or "VH1-style songwriters". My favourite modern records are not anything like one another except that almost every one is not known by the masses. "Surfacing" is certainly the most "commercial" of all my favourite records that have been released in the last 10 years.

These songs are produced with a much more organic feel than her other recordings. There are electronic bits but the drums and everything else feels much more real than on anything else she's done. The magic of this record is the songwriting mixed with the production. It is unbelievable how beautiful this record is. If you love music, you should get this set of songs. It's funny because I went back and listened to Fumbling Toward Ecstacy and found it to sound irrelevant after buying "Surfacing". Additionally, I rushed out to buy Afterglow upon it's release (the follow-up to "Surfacing") and found it to be overproduced and synthetic feeling, similar to FTE. I don't know what special moment in time caught Mrs. Mc Lachlan in 1996 while recording "Surfacing", but something unbelievably special came out of it. Too bad the greatness of this album will likely never be approached again.

Later in 1997 I heard "I Will Remember You" and thought it was stunning. I assumed she had recorded it before "Surfacing" and was shocked that there were other hidden gems from prior sessions that were equal to Surfacing. Unfortunately, this song was from the Surfacing sessions, and it had just been left off the album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album...but.......2003-10-07

This has to be one of Sarah Mclachlan's best albums to date. Her voice shines on almost every song and her ability to infuse the listener with emotion and sadness comes through on such tracks as 'Mystery,' 'Angel,' and 'Full of Grace.' My only qualm is that one of her best songs, 'Prayer Of St. Francis' is only offered on this import cd, which costs twice that of a regular cd. It would be nice of Ms. Mclachlan if she would re-release a U.S. version of Surfacing with the added tracks found here on this import. Otherwise, if you want great music or are a faithful listener of Sarah Mclachlan's touching music, buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars sublime sarah.......2003-09-18

sarah mclachlan represents an era of love songs, really touching songs. surfacing is one of the most wonderful cd's i've ever heard. the melodies in it are like water for a thirsty heart and light for a darkened soul. they are the wings of imagination and so profound like the soul of the world. i love the way this depressing album (sound paradoxical, i know) lifts you self-esteem and gives you a new perspective of life. sarah's voice is so warm like a fireplace on a winter's night you can intenalized all the songs in it and make them yours. i recommend this cd's if you really like the best. listen to "angel." it will give you wings.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate!.......2002-05-29

Sarah has the most perfect and beautiful singing voice I have ever heard, and her brilliant piano and guitar playing just adds to her over the top magnifigance. And on top of all that, her music includes amazing rythmic beats, which makes it great to dance to, cruise to, or relax to.

Whenever I hear this album it's like instant peacefulness. You will not be dissapointed by it, so go out and buy it!
