Think of Pullman as a Y2K edition of Robert Fripp's '80s-era, Appalachian-rooted League of Crafty Guitarists. Pullman's four collaborators--Douglas McCombs (Tortoise, Eleventh Dream Day), Bundy K. Brown (Tortoise cofounder), Curtis Harvey (Rex) and Chris Brokaw (Come)--use Turnstyles & Junkpiles to demonstrate their sincere interest in (and appreciation for) American stylistic influences on modern repertoire for acoustic guitar. A significant departure from each artist's adventurous group projects, Turnstyles & Junkpiles involves only stringed instruments--acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, classical guitar, mandola, dobro, and banjo--and brings to mind the works of John Fahey and Leo Kottke. The reflective, folk-inclined compositions--recorded in a loft over a four-day period live onto two-track tape--are picturesque, thoughtfully conceived, and subtly melodic. Other than a somewhat whimsical sixth track ("Lyasnya"), the recording's 14 ruminating selections sustain a reflective, involving, slightly abstract character--ideal for an NPR-fueled state of contemplation. --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars And softly we move on our gondola.......2000-08-02

the gondola moves back and forth on the peaceful water of Venice, and just as you hear the wood creak as the gondolier rows with his powerful arms, we hear a guitarist churn out the notes that soothe us forward as we hear is chair creaking in rhythymic leanings.

This album is superb. Try track 6.

5 out of 5 stars Great record that demonstrates less is more........1999-10-02

Turnstyles and Junkpiles is a simple record on the surface but is actually quite innovative with layers of textures. Nice to see musicians with diverse backgrounds and projects record an album that shows an appreciation for a good melody. One of the best albums I have purchased in a long time. Makes you want to take a drive... you know
