I know these pEople personally........2007-03-19
I've been to their shows and seen the grand architect of their music at work.I didn't like Mr. Mandella's anti-woman bantering about rape, but I DO like his wife's obvious displeasure with it.I know Brian I stayed with him and his wife for a week.I know the sweep and majesty of their JewisH Violin remake where they step aside and let him play to clapping right like a Jewish family in the midst in the grip of the Nazi's playing their final joy and saying:I was glad to be alive: THis is what this song sounds like. It's the one after "Birth like A Drunkard reel." "Open the records" is a searing indictment of shell oil and it's enforced "Ownership" of lands in Guatemala and the government (I was so proud of everyone reviewing this that I gave everyone a "Helpful" vote on their rviews."Thaaank you Vanessa.." "Your welcome.." I say..)It's a rich hi..well lEt's darn old repeat what another reviewer said:"Rich tapestry" and majesty of sounds. This is Oi,Klezmer,Celtic music. It's the morning sunshine of Ms.Selena Fox,the orange juice, the thrill of sex and love for the first time, the added advantage of Ms.KathY Kelley coming to talk at their shows of "Voices in the Wilderness.."of seeing Brian the Bass player,of having Robin Mandella leave me in fear only To (or was she leaving so I could talk to Kathy..)walk back..Of taking Jim to see them. The powerful "Horse driving" whip of a commanding morale that Robin has.The unspoken feminisM and maybe more that one can't say when reviewing a christian group. The idiotic husband implying I want attention scolded by his wife, but perhaps brought around, the good, good, music and charitable works these individuals engage in.The love and humanity the religious discourse, although the marked line "A joy that outdances the Pagans" is cruel and idiotic,as Paganism is a very loving thing. But then again, these are Christians and their finding their way in their own way.Did you know that when we sanctioned Iraq the Leukemia rate of recovery fell for children from 75% to 0%?That's a result of not getting our medicine folks.Let's hope thiS (Iraqi children are children..)regime stabilizes.Lesley stahl's interview with Madeline Albright from 60 minutes the opening sequence of thiS cd.Betcha didn't Know that.No really. It's not credited. You have to ask them.Kathy Kelley rocks.Wonder what she's doin. She went to prison for a year for entering a base illegally and putting up anti-war signs.Watch yourselves. She managed to get the soldier apprehending her to pray for peace with her.Huh? Maybe she should do my work foor me.Get stuff dOne.
WHAT!.......2006-09-20
What is this massacre of sounds. I mean, I bought this album expecting something extremely heavy (the album cover deceived me). I popped it into my CD player and immedietly turned it off. Its like Irish folk songs. Dont waste your money on it.
It's better than you're thinking........2006-09-13
Ballydowse is very impresive for reasons that are hard to articulate. With all the weird influences and contradicting genre terms, one would expect it to be a gimmicky, "hey thats neat, okay next album" sound. It's not. It works. And not only does it work, but it's impressively solid and thought-out music on every track. Don't be misled though--Ballydowse is not mainstream. It is weird. This isn't exactly the sort of music that meshes into my Party Shuffle. Despite this, though, it is also *intensely* likeable. Don't let a little out-of-print status get in your way: buy this fantastic album.
pretty schnazzy.......2006-02-27
I'm not a christian and not much into folk music, so giving this band 4 stars should speak for itself. The fast pace 'almost punkish' sound to the albulm with added intruments of fiddle, guitar, and those big band drums makes this album fun to listen too!!
The lyrics are deep and philisophical. I especailly enjoy "Cresent".
