Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Standard teen scene with 5 stand-outs!.......2006-10-23

Yeah, new seekers of rare garage rock will like this, and will be impressed by the lavish liner booklet (x-lnt research by Alec Palao, again).

But I'll direct this at intermediate collectors, who may have heard enough frat rock rarities - and wonder if this entry in the usually well-presented Nuggets from the Golden State has a few stand-outs, not already well-comped...
Yes again:

Having a lot of these nuggets/pebbles type sets already, it's safe to say the following songs on The Sound of Young Sacramento will surprise even the well-worn collector:

"Too Much Loving" by The Liberty Lads may be familiar already, or at least it soon will be to fans of oddball guitar instros, even tho it does have words eventually!

"Blowin' My Mind" - The Fugitives Prime punk protest, with extra acidity in the vitriol.

"Aristocrat" - Goodtime Music Co. Organ-dominated, until the searing guitar solo finally burns through!

"What Would Life Be" - KIX-S Mid-way thru, an inventive Yardbirds swipe takes this puppy to the stratosphere!

"Special Girl" - Chelsea Sidecar Amazing Moby Grape meet the Beatles monster closes the disc, not to miss!

There you go, adrift in a decidely Beatles-Byrdsy teen tryout territory, at least 5 above average songs, good enough to titillate the experienced eardrum.

Buy used or rent.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, second-tier '60s garage rock.......2003-01-15

The thing to keep in mind about Sacramento -- especially the Sacramento of the late 1960s -- is that while it is geographically near our precious cultural mecca of San Francisco, it is really part of the dreaded San Joaquin Valley... Aggieville, Cow Town, Podunk Heights. So for all the garage bands on this cool collection, making it big in SF was of course the ideal, and all their efforts were imitative of trends that originated elsewhere. The Beatles and Byrds and Standells each find their echo in the Kee-Notes, Children of Stone and the Fugitives, all of whom cut their own private "That Thing You Do" at the studios of Mr. Bill Rase, a local DJ and TV host who began recording bands in the mid-'60s. The charm of the fresh-faced teen band comes through loud, clear and frequently out of tune on this excellent disc. Somehow the desperation and aspirations of wannabee bands has an originality of its own, and the amazing thing is that collections like this continue to find new, cool old material to illuminate the point. Fun stuff!
