Customer Reviews:
Van Gogh was not crazy, though I think Mr. Frye is!!!.......2003-10-07
The previous reviewer suffers from a distinct lack of historical knowledge regarding the great and tragic artist, Vincent Van Gogh. Mr. Frye says, "...Often, it seems, near-madness seems to be a close neighbour [sic] of creative genius, Van Gogh being the most popular example I can cite...". He couldn't be more wrong. Van Gogh suffered from tinnitus, the medical term for the perception of sound when no external sound is present. It is often referred to as "ringing in the ears," although some people hear hissing, roaring, whistling, chirping, or clicking. Tinnitus can be intermittent or constant-with single or multiple tones-and its perceived volume can range from subtle to shattering. About 50 million people suffer from some form of tinnitus, and about two million patients are so seriously debilitated that they cannot function on a "normal," day-to-day basis. Van Gogh was one of those with the more severe form of the disease. The cure for tinnitus existed in Van Gogh's day, but it was not well known and many cases were misdiagnosed as mental illness. Some sufferers experience so much agony that they have been known to gouge or cut their ears (as in Van Gogh's case). How do we know that he, in fact, had the disease? The diagnostic methodology for tinnitus is generally more than 90% accurate and several expert medical professionals have reviewed Van Gogh's journals and correspondence and come to the conclusion that he had tinnitus. Put that in your audiophilic pipe and smoke it, Kerry!
An observation..........2003-09-30
I am sure that many of Connelly's behavioural problems are actually symptoms of psychological dysfunction far too deep for a layman like myself to interpret or analyze with any degree of accuracy. Often, it seems, near-madness seems to be a close neighbour of creative genius, Van Gogh being the most popular example I can cite. One thing I have discovered about the human memory is the longer one seeks for answers the more one finds.
Certainly, the objective of Connelly's "Shipwreck" seems to be to intentionally provoke his audience. Perhaps we should act as we would with a three-year-old spoiled toddler and simply ignore him.
For my part, I'm a bit relieved not to have to worry about being devoured by the Tyrannosaurus that is this listening experience. Unfortunately, upon listening to this recording, I find myself being devoured instead on a much subtler plane, by a host of parasitical beings collectively known as "Connelly". Sometimes I think I would have preferred the Rex...
shedding his past, finding his voice.......2002-09-13
I was blown away when I first heard this album, admiring the power and emotion evoked by Mr. Connelly. As a rabid Rev Co fan back in the late 80's/ early 90's I was shocked and pleased by this album and had to rush out and buy all his solo stuff. I think this is still his strongest. Written after breaking from the Jourgesen machine, Connelly brings intellegence and sensitivity to the "singer songwriter" while not being bogged down in overly sensitive cliches brought with the title.
Other than the voice, I do not see the Bowie/ Walker thing.
Chris is an orginal and quite a gent in public. I urge any semi-curious concert goer to see him live, he does not disappoint, and is very warm after the preformance, signing nearly anything put infront of him and chatting with his fans. I actually shot a game of pool with him after a concert ... just because because the table was open and he wanted to play.
Acquired taste but required listening.......2001-06-30
As the title says, this is an acquired listen. After listening to Chris Connelly add his talents to great industrial bands like KMFDM, Ministry and the like, I thought I'd check out one of his solo outings. I had heard that Chris was "trying to distance himself from the industrial genre" that I was so familiar hearing him in, but I never expected this!
At first, I hated this CD, I have to admit it. But, I liked the lyrics. Pure poetry and very intelligent. So I continued to listen giving it many chances and after a while, it really grew on me.
This disc is packed with rock songs and Chris croons like David Bowie on most. You've got some more agressive songs like 'Drench' and 'What's Left But Solid Gold?' that really are excellent songs. The guitar is of a heavier tone but transposed on a rock riff. 'Detestimony III' is a lofty and enlightened tune that features a really cool solo at the end. 'Meridian Afterburn' and 'Shipwreck' are both more laid back songs. 'Spoonfed Celeste' has a country feel to it.
Basically, this CD is kind of a mish-mash of different styles and Chris pulls it off wonderfully. However, those expecting distorted vocals and harsh industrial beats will be disappointed. This is not an industrial CD.
Most importantly, Chris said that this CD is a kiss off to a lot of negative energy from his past. And don't those always make really great listens?
