5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece... Need I Say More?.......2005-12-23

Yet another Queen masterpiece... hardly surprising is it? After all, we are talking about a band that you just can't imagine to be anything but legendary. As a friend of mine once said, they are like a dream band. Freddie Mercury - fantastic singer. Brian May - fantastic guitarist. Roger Taylor - fantastic drummer. John Deacon - fantastic bass player. And each one a fantastic songwriter. See? You can't go wrong with buying an album by these guys. Perfect in every area.

So, on with the review. News of The World took my breath away, literally. A Night At The Opera took my breath away also, so I knew it had to mean something good. What better way to start an album than with two of the most well-known songs in the world, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. Classics, the pair of them. Then it can only get better, as we are treated to Sheer Heart Attack, a fast-moving rocker guaranteed to get you headbanging. Things are slowed down a bit with All Dead, All Dead - plenty of time for recovery. But that doesn't mean it's a boring song. It is a beautiful piece of work, on which Brian May sings more sweetly than you could have hoped for (nice one Brian!) Then comes Spread Your Wings, a John Deacon composition that I'm sure you'll agree is one of his best songs. The next track is one of my favourites, Fight From The Inside, which features Roger Taylor singing lead vocal (I've always loved his voice) and some cool guitar. Very funky track. Get Down, Make Love is next up and is a very interesting song. Followed by a Brian May classic, Sleeping On The Sidewalk. After that is Who Needs You which is another Deacon song. I really like the acoustic guitar work in that one. And then we have It's Late, which is the longest song on the album but boy is it wicked! And finally to finish off, we have My Melancholy Blues, a Freddie song which lingered in my mind long after I listened to it. It is a nice, slow piano-based track and Freddie's vocals are beautiful in it (aren't they always). It certainly does leave you feeling a bit melancholy.

By all means buy this one. It is absolutely fantastic and well worth the listen - or two, or three, or four... heck, a thousand!

News Of The World (1977.) Queen's sixth album.

By the latter half of the seventies, Queen had already made a name for themselves as one of the best and most popular and successful rock groups in the world at the time. They had scored a number of hits worldwide, recorded the most expensive-to-produce album of all time in their era (A Night At The Opera cost over a million dollars to produce), and had won over all kinds of audiences. The two albums they had most recently released were excellent, but the band decided to enter a somewhat experimental era in 1977. Read on for my review of the band's sixth album, News Of The World.

I'd be lying if I said this album was a masterpiece comparable to A Night At The Opera, but it's still a damn good Queen album. Queen was always a band to try new things, and that's one of the reasons I like them so well. They explore a plethora of musical stylings. Opening the album is We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions, arguably the band's most popular song (or songs.) The former can be heard at practically every sporting event in America - proof that the group had created a true classic for the ages. Though this twosome is the only really popular material here, you've gotta go beyond the hits to really explore this album. With Sheer Heart Attack, the band unleashes a pure, unadulterated PUNK ROCK song. The song is every bit as much a punk song as anything the Ramones or Sex Pistols were doing in this era. Another aggressive tune is Mercury's classic composition, Get Down Make Love. The song is so agressive of one, that it would later be covered by the goth/industrial rock group Nine Inch Nails! And who could forget classic ballads like the melodic All Dead All Dead, the Nilsson-esque Who Needs You, and the classic Closer My Melancholy Blues? The album is uneven and a bit rough around the edges, but I think these factors only add to the album's overall charm. It's an excellent album - no questions asked.

In 1991, the Queen catalogue was remastered and reissued. The reissues feature full lyrics, rare band/discography pictures from around the world, and of course, bonus tracks. On here, you get a remix of We Will Rock You. Although I'm not too fond of this remix (or any of the remixes featured as bonus tracks in this reissue series), this one has the distinction of being different enough from the original version of the song - something most of the remixes lack. If you've got an older CD issue, it's not worth buying the new version for the addition of a single track, though.

News Of The World is, well, good news. While Queen didn't make another A Night At The Opera or A Day At The Races with this album, they tried something new and did a good job of it, and I commend them for their efforts. No Queen collection is complete without this album. If you're a fan of the band, don't hesitate to add it to your collection.
