5 out of 5 stars Earth and Fire-"Reality Fills Fantansy".......2006-02-06

I agree with the previous writers-here in the US most people have never heard of this group-what a loss. If you start talking about E&F, they think you are mistaken, that you want to talk about Earth Wind & Fire. I used to own this album in 1981, in Africa. I lost it and have never been able to locate it.I credit my interest in music, music appreciation skills and openmindedness to this group. Today I stumbled upon their website-www.earth-and-fire.nl/english/albums.htm.Unfortunately the site was not responding well. But at least now I have hope of finding it. My favorite piece was "Season of the Falling Leaves". I should also say that I was only 19 when I got the album and it was the only one I ever listened to. But listening to all the reviews on this site, I am certainly collecting all the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Hollands 2nd finest ( next to Golden Earring)........2002-04-25

Thank you Ben Miler(previous reviewer)for doing all the hard work for me.I agree 90%.I saw Earth and Fire as warm up for Focus in 72 or 73 and they blew me away. This is very prog-
popish with beautiful vocals and solid instrumentation.
Atlantis and To The World are the more prog of the 3,and Gate is a little more prog pop,but still great. The extra trax here
is what brings this box down to 4 stars, which are mainly
b-sides,and a couple from their first record.I was very happy when this 2disc set was released, because my old records are very worn, too bad they did not put on Song for the Marching
Children instead of the filler.Agreat package indeed.

4 out of 5 stars One of the great Dutch prog rock bands.......2002-02-18

Earth & Fire, along with Ekseption, Focus, Alquin, Supersister, Kayak, Finch, etc. was one of the leading prog rock bands to come out of the Netherlands. Earth & Fire supposedly had a long string of hits in Europe, but you'd never know that from living in America since their music never receives radio airplay here. And despite them being able to rack up the hits, they were able to also give us some great prog rock in the process. Earth & Fire is best known for featuring wonderful female vocals from Jerney Kaagman. 3 Originals features three of their albums originally released on Polydor: Atlantis (1973), To the World of the Future (1975), and Gate to Infinity (1977). Atlantis is by far the best one on this set (although their previous one, not featured here, 1971's Song of the Marching Children is even better and E&F's best, in my opinion). The album opens up with the side length epic, a title track, about the rise and destruction of Atlantis (something many prog bands seemed to know all about, including Eloy from Germany and Ethos from Fort Wayne, Indiana). It actually sounds more like a collection of several cuts instead of a whole side length piece with several themes and ideas segues together. Themes do get recurred, but if you love the Mellotron, Atlantis has no shortage of it at all and the side length cut shows it! The rest of Atlantis features shorter pieces, including the wonderful "Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight". There's the tron heavy "Fanfare" that recalls "Storm and Thunder" from Song of the Marching Children. "Love, Please Close the Door" is a nice, acoustic number that closes that album. Two years later, Earth & Fire gave us To the World of the Future, which shows them changing their musical style. The Mellotron isn't used as much, in favore of more synthesizers. Disco-tendencies beginning to surface like the title track. Also for the first time, they added horns to their music. I have to admit that I have never been all that fond of "How Time Flies", simply because it's overblown, both musically and lyrically. Luckily the next cut is a wonderful, spacy, fusiony instrumental called "The Last Seagull". Electric piano is used as well as string synth and nice guitar work. "Only Time Will Tell" harkens back to their older sound and wouldn't sound out of place on Atlantis. "Voice From Yonder" is one of my favorites, incorporating a seance in the music. "Love of Life" was originally a single released the previous year in 1974 and included on To the World of the Future and was a hit for them. Great piece indeed and it demonstrated where the band was headed once To the World of the Future was released. "Circus" is probably the most progressive number as it goes through several changes and themes. Personally I find To the World of the Future a little weaker than what came before, but it's still worth having. Gate to Infinity is said to be more pop and disco-oriented, which I don't doubt, since the band became even more commercial with the likes of Reality Fills Fantasy (1979) and Andromeda Girl (1981).
