5 out of 5 stars Hey E. A Solinas.......2006-03-06

The lyrics might be weird because it's an old, old folk song: http://www.lyon.edu/wolfcollection/songs/appleiwish1262.html
Ms. Apple also does a great "Chicken in the Breadpan" on that site.

Anyway, love the Furnaces take!

4 out of 5 stars Single again.......2005-03-01

The Fiery Furnaces excel at making really fun, strange indierock, and these two tracks (both of which are on their "EP" album) are both solid examples of what the duo can do. The only downside may be that the single itself is so short -- only two songs long.

"Single Again" has an electronic dance-punk twist, almost sounding like Devo at times. Then it suddenly tones itself down, allowing Eleanor Friedenberger to sing the tale of how "I married a man/he was the plague of my life/and I wish I was single again." She then describes death threats, how he "beat me and banged me," and finally how she rejoices when the slime finally dies. Except... she then marries another guy. Described as "the devil's grandfather," he does the exact same stuff. Hello, self-destructive cycle.

It's an odd song, especially since the lyrics have a whimsical edge to a very grim topic: "Cause when I was single, my pockets did jingle and I wish I was single again." And because you would expect a song like this to be somber, not dancey. After the pleasant shock of "Single Again," the second song "Evergreen" seems tame -- a singsongy little acoustic ballad, heavy on the piano, and containing a pleasant little song about evergreen trees at night.

It's a fairly good single because it contains two incredibly good songs, showing off the Furnaces both when they are simple and stripped-down, and when they are poppy and catchy. Also, we get to see their writing both as a childlike rhyme, and as a complex ballad about, "Needle prick my spruce root/Dear little hemlock shoot/Make me stay sharp and keen, evergreen."

On the other hand, the single is very, very short. Enough said.

Those who already have "EP" won't need to bother with "Single Again," but it's a fairly good introduction to the more offbeat, accessible singles that the Fiery Furnaces have put out.

5 out of 5 stars Really cool.......2004-12-08

This is great. It didn't really fit in with Blueberry Boat. Leave it to the Fiery Furnaces to release a non-album single. It's Roxy Music or Manic Street Preachers. "Evergreen" is one of their most moving songs. Believe it. They are suppose to release this on a compilation in 2005.
