5 out of 5 stars somber perfection.......2006-01-17

grandfather's funeral... rural despair... at first i giggled at it, but when i checked the music out, i found it just about appropriate. but don't let that have you expecting some alt country drivel, this is some truly dark, poetic and evocative stuff right here. what separates this guy from the rest of the "pack" for me (although the music IS quite original in and of itself) is that he's not some skinny and scrappy quasi-bohemian alcoholic, but rather a heavy-set and shaven dude (that somehow makes his pain more "credible" and "unique" for me) with a deep, somber, masculine croon that doesn't sound the tiniest bit forced. just a naturally powerful voice that sends shivers down your spine. he's got that "whispering in your ear at normal pitch" thing going on, for lack of a better way to describe it. apart from that, expect slow-paced songs that consist mostly of acoustic guitars, with some distant humming sounds etc. and occasional drums. the topics are dark explorations of life, death, etc. but quite poetic, IMHO. occasonally, the dude "let's it rip" vocally (the end of the "breathe" chorus, etc.) and that's when the shivers REALLY set it. i don't know what else to say, this stuff is so emotional, unique, dark and moving that it's almost bizarre. screw elliott smith, this is the real deal, folks. listen on headphones, at dusk/night, alone.

p.s. and don't expect no neurosis here.

4 out of 5 stars Like Neurosis, you're gonna have to let it grow on you.......2004-06-17

It was difficult finding this CD on Amazon.com First off his name is spelled wrong, it's supposed to be Steve Von Til. His two solo CDs are listed under different names... Good luck finding Scott Kelly's solo effort as well.

Anyhow, if you've picked up "A Sun That Never Sets", "Soveriegn" or just happened to grab the new Mp3 from the upcoming CD at www.neurosis.com ... You'll notice Steve has been crooning more than usual. See: "Stones From The Sky" off of "ASTNS". His solo work is stripped down, folky, bare, spacious and looming. Von Til's vocals evoke a robustness akin to a heavily sedated Jim Morrision. Admittedly, Steve's words are delivered with considerably more flair, and an increasigly lush backing breaks away from the monotony of his first solo release.

I would recommend this to fans of The Tea Party, Jerry Cantrell(in his more somber moments) and of course those open-minded enough to adore Neurosis.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Folk Songs.......2003-07-29

This album is rustic, yet in a ghostly sort of way. There is a definite atmosphere of rural despair here. As odd as this sounds, these songs would sound appropriate at your grandfather's funeral.....and I mean that in a good way.

Hey "JRM"...please learn how to read. If you are truly a fan of Steve and Neurosis, at least read the label on the CD. His last name is indeed spelled "Von Till."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-01-13

I've had his first solo album for a while, hearing about it through the Neurosis web site, so when I heard about this one coming out, I bought it immediately before hearing anything. I wasn't disappointed. It's 10 tracks that fit somewhere around a dark, introspective folk style. It's minimalistic, but not so much as As The Crow Flies. Most tracks feature his voice and a few other instruments (mainly guitars, but some tracks have violins, banjo, or an organ. Drums appear in a few). The 6th song, Running Dry, is the only "full band" song on the album in the regular sense. The last song, The Harpy, is a poem spoken by von Till's grandfather as recorded by his father. It serves to close the album in an interesting way.
