5 out of 5 stars Open All Night: In the Shadows.......2006-04-20

One of my favorite Rhino compilations. Great late night mellow listening. Great tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Series.......2002-08-04

This is entry in the Open All Night series to which I find myself returning most. I own all three, but the cuts on In The Shadows are the most suited to those quiet hours, long after midnight, when you are alone and just want to float with the music. Heidi Berry's "Heart Like a Wheel" and Jane Siberry's "Love is Everything" are alone worth the price of admission.

What makes this series so worth investing in, if you are of an introspective bent, is that the song choices steer away from the obvious and include some very worthy music from artists whose music you will be unfamiliar with (or at least I was). These are songs which probably aren't in your collection, but deserve to be.

And, if you're like me, listening to these Open All Night discs will send you diving into your own collection to add some of your own cuts to the ones here, to get a new mix which heads in a slightly different direction but covers the same dark corners.
A little Leonard Cohen, some Tangerine Dream. Perfect.

The only criticism I have of the series is the lack of lyrics on the inserts. The liner notes are fine, but I believe that the actual poetry would speak most eloquently of all. That said, the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Jewel In The Crown.......2001-08-17

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the co-producer of this album, as well as the liner note writer, so I suppose I am a little biased when it comes to any of the three discs in the Open All Night series. This set is in many ways the nearest and dearest to me of the three, and is closest to the heart of what we were trying to capture when we first devised the concept.

It's intended, as are all the Open All Night series, to be listened to at night... the later the better. In The Shadows is perhaps the "dreamiest" or "spaciest" of the three, and we picked songs that have an almost other-worldly quality. Two of them, in fact, aren't even in English, which is a first for the series. I don't believe you have to speak French to enjoy Gabriel Yacoub's "Je Suis A Court" or Autour De Lucie's "Au Large Deja." And one of the biggest surprises on the disc is Frank Zappa's "Sleep Dirt," which I believe exposes a side of him that most rock fans have never heard.

Some of the artists on this album are criminally underexposed. If you have lately come to know Eva Cassidy, or are familiar with Sandy Denny, I'm sure you will be enchanted by Heidi Berry. Lisa Germano's "The Darkest Night Of All" is as exquisite a piece of music as ever I have heard, and her albums are rare treasures indeed. You could do yourself a huge favour by going right this instant to Jane Siberry's When I Was A Boy album and ordering it. [There's also a Jane Siberry two-disc anthology coming in 2002 from Rhino, if you can wait that long.]

Though the music spans three decades, I think it all hangs together emotionally and sonically, and I very much hope anyone who buys this album will use it as a springboard to investigate some wonderful artists who have made their music in the shadows. Once again, I can only hope that you get as much enjoyment out of listening to this as I did in helping to put it together.
