Album Description
Indie-kids Athlete return with their exceptional new album 'Tourist', following on from the Mercury Music Prize nominated 'Vehicles & Animals'. This album is a significant step forward for the band, exploring new epic rock territory as previously inhabited by Coldplay & recently Keane, & includes the feel-good anthem 'Half Light' & hit single 'Wires'. Having received an outstanding response across press, TV & radio, those with any sense would place bets on Athlete being one of the biggest bands of 2005. Parlophone.
Album Details
Second Full Length from the Britrockers. Will Appeal to Fans of Keane, the Doves, Coldplay and Feeder.
Customer Reviews:
Nice to listen anytime.......2005-07-22
Athlete was another band I never heard about, before I saw it recommended, here at Amazon. So, I got the album and just listen it to the end. And guess what happened? I really liked it. This guys play really great music. Their style is somewhere between Coldplay, Keane and maybe a bit like Travis or Snow Patrol also. In general, a soft rock, with nice ballads and couple more up-beat songs. The best songs are Wires, Twenty Four Hours, Modern Mafia and Half Light, but also all the other songs are really good.
Wires and Twenty Four Hours are real ballads. Half Light is one of the most up-beat songs, it's a bit more lively and it just sounds so nice. Modern Mafia is my favourite song. It sounds like a ballad, but then the chours are just great sounding and they make the song more lively.
So, just get Athelte's Tourist if you consider yourself a music lover. You just have to have it.
delighful music.......2005-05-30
let me just start off by saying, if you get a chance to see them live, do it. i first encountered the band through satellite radio playing their single wires. i heard they were going to be in town and after a few friends encouraged me to go, i saw them play in front of about 50 people and i was so impressed. the album is amazing, and yet it hardly does their live show justice. everyone who compares them to coldplay and keane needs to see them live to understand that there is a huge difference.
with that said, this album is a must have. it's got beautiful lyrics which ultimately lift these songs higher than most songs you hear on the radio. the album is full of surprises, and each song is a musical treat. the album starts off with "chances" which is slow and melodic, but then switches in to a higher gear with "half light." "tourist", "wires" and "trading air" are three stellar songs with amazing lyrics that you can not only relate to, but you can really feel what the singer is feeling. thats how much they translate the emotion of their music to the listener. beyond that, it just gets better. some of my faves include the next few songs, "you threw everything at me" and "24 hours". the ending with "I love" is the perfect way to end the album.
and while you're thinking about getting this, you might as well pick up vehicles and animals. each album is a gem in the world of processed music.
dreamy and all.......2005-04-08
everything about this album is the perfect remedy to a hard days work . Myself being only a teenager often go to sleep to this album - really soothes all the aches and pains - maybe a bit depressing, but still catchy moments keeps the whole thing runnign smoothly/
Likened to Coldplay and Keane, Athlete takes mixtures of both, and makes the perfect ingredient - ooo la la...
Wired!.......2005-04-03
From the very beginning of this album, the relationships to Keane and Coldplay dissolve as Athlete's sound heads in a completely different direction. And it's a good thing it does, too! Keane and Coldplay's careful renditions and cookie-cutter melodies can be a bit trite at times, while Athlete tries on a new style of dress with a funkier sound. Lead single 'Wires' is probably the single of the year and it baffles me how it still has received little to no airplay in Canada! Highlights of the album include 'Twenty-four Hours' and 'Tourist' (my favourite single on the album which features sonic swerves and highlights Joel Pott's airy able voice). While Athlete has received critical acclaim overseas, their fate in North America remains to be decided. With an album like this, it can only be good news! Try also their debut album, 'Vehicles & Animals', which was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize.
Athlete - 'Tourist'.......2005-03-22
Personally, this band came out of nowhere to stun me. I first heard of them flipping through channels, and their video for 'Wires' came on MTV. I didnt think much of it. The same incident occured a few more times, and still didnt think much of it. Then i downloaded the song, 'Wires', and i was addicted to it. It could very well be the best single of 2005 thus far. I picked up their records a few days later.
What stuns me the most about this album, is how layered it is. Their sound is very full, and somewhat dreamy at times. The music is beautiful throughout.
The album kicks off with 'Chances', which at first, seems like a slow piano ballad, before blasting off in a chorus filled with a whole orchestra, which will leave you singing "It's all about your, cries and kisses". The next track, is the title track, 'Tourist', which starts with lead signer Joel Pott singing "This European air, it always warms my face" with nothing but an acoustic guitar.
The first single, 'Wires', definetly is a major highlight. It was written about when Joel Pott daughter was born premature, and had suffered complications. This is really beautiful. The lyrics just speak for itself.
The next track, is 'If I Found Out'. What will strike a chord to most people, is the choir that appears towards the end of the song. It defiently, something original and different. It didnt come off bad at all.
'Street Map' is another beautiful number. It starts off, very much like the opening track; piano and vocals. Half way through, it would seem that the record skipped and everything just stops, before the whole band coming in a few seconds later into one of most beautiful parts of the album.
The second last track is 'Twenty Four Hours' which is catchy, and gorgeous. This one will leave you singing for sure. The album ends off with 'I Love'. A slow, laidback track with nothing but an acoustic guitar, percussions, and a few etra sounds here and there. A good song, to end an incredible album.
Though most of the album being very depressing, one of a more upbeat track, would have to be 'Modern Mafia'. Its the most upbeat track on the record and will definetly leave you singing.
Many people compare Athlete's new sound to label mates, Coldplay. I also heard many people say that the reason for the change, could be because the label could be banking on the success, and tried to make these guys into a carbon copy. Personally, i think this album is way too good for such a comment.
Athlete have worked hard, and the music definetly displays their talent. The band has definetly grown musically a lot. This album is filled of catchy songs, which are really beautiful. There are no fillers in here for sure. Joel Pott writes them with such emotion, and he sings them even better. If you can get your hands on the limited edtion pressing with the DVD (which showcases the making of this record, the 'Wires' video, and other live tracks), its worth it as well. It will show you a behind a scenes look on the making of the record, which is pretty rad.
