Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lost Classics, Volume 1.......2003-01-11

I lucked out and discovered this CD series in the discount bin of a used CD store. Four volumes in total, they were each released in 1991, and feature lost nuggets from the Epic/Columbia vaults, from the `60s to the `70s.

Volume 1 focuses on the `70s, and it's my favorite of the bunch because it's so eclectic. There's a great mix of `70s rock ("Hallelujah"), funky, screaming soul ("Get It On"), groove-heavy gospel (the shoulda-been-a-huge-hit "Are You Ready"), and the gentle, "singer-songwriter" stuff that was so big in that decade ("Echo Park").

Not all of the groups on here are unheard of; the Looking Glass contributes the opening track (their biggest hit, "Brandy," is on volume 2), and we also get a few songs from the infamous Redbone. The Isley Brothers also show up, giving the best track on the whole album: the uncut, 5 minute version of "That Lady," which sounds like nothing heard in soul before or sense. Imagine Jimi Hendrix playing guitar over a more traditional soul/pop song, before exploding into a fuzzed-out frenzy.

Turns out the CDs can be bought new for about the same price I paid for them used! So don't hesitate: if you're looking for some good, forgotten rock, you can't go wrong with this series.

5 out of 5 stars Strong compilation of hard to find classics.......1999-12-02

Sometimes, we can find a album to purchase in order to get one song. There are a handful of these songs on this one underpriced disc.

K.Barbour's "Echo Park" is a great song from my youth, and would be satisfied with this song alone. I am not 100% sure about all levels of its meaning, but I recall hearing it, and feeling sorry for older people. It still moves me to hear it after more than two decades.

"Are You Ready" by Pacific Gas & Electric just makes one move to a great backbeat. Argent, Chi Coltraine and Sly help round out one of the best values Amazon has to offer!
