Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for the first live audio disc...not the Video CD.......2003-04-13

Looks like someone beat me to the first review for this set which I've had for a week or so. As the previous reviewer notes, the Video CD is a pretty poor bootleg and it is notated as such in the liner notes. It pretty much seems included for collector purposes. The first audio only disc is what makes this set worth purchasing. Taken directly from the mixing desk at the band's second official live performance (at least according to Lynott near the beginning of the disc) the sound quality is a bit raw, but definitely tolerable. I'd rate it a 7 on a 10 scale and at some moments maybe an 8. Laurence Archer's guitar seems to fall back in the mix toward the end of Night In The Life Of A Blues Singer and then stays that way for the last three songs. That's okay because the strength of the disk is on all the tracks leading up to Night...anyway. I particularly like the tasty electric guitar harmonies at the beginning of Sarah. It is too bad that the Video CD is such poor quality since it would be great to have cleaner versions of Sisters Of Mercy, Military Man, Harlem, Dedication, & I Don't Need This since they are exclusive to the second disc. The previous reviewer states he saw this tour live. Must've been nice since this set might be about the only thing those of us who never had the chance will ever to get to hear live from this project. I reviewed the studio sessions box set also and I'll say it again: This band should've been signed because there is no doubt they were all talented musicians. Thanks to Mark Stanway for making this stuff available, even if the sound isn't always perfect. 3 1/2 stars and would be 4 if the package was more consistent. Phil's legacy lives on...
