this is the 2nd solo album from dan matz (of windsor for the derby) and this release sounds markedly better and more focused than the birdwatcher debut (which ain't too bad either). these are pop tunes, most of them relatively short and sweet. his vocals and lyrics are amazing, and more on the foreground than in his WFTD material. like windsor, it is very guitar based, and very dark (but with an occasional wit and whimsy that makes me smile). despite fundamental inevitable similarities, it is dichotimously different...more acoustic stylings, fingerpicking, tricky guitar work, and folk induced, down home, country-tinged sensibilities. this is an absolute must for any fan of windsor for the derby. it is good to hear matz trying something different, and succeeding.
