Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You don't need no Drugstore Woman..........2004-12-21

You just need this CD. Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Psychedelia. This little bird held it all firmly in its tiny claws. Why is it that the best bands are always so damn obscure?

5 out of 5 stars Rocking Men Indeed!!!.......2003-06-06

Whoever says this is not an innovative, great(one of early metal's best)album; is a poser who needs to go to Metal 101. Budgie may have been one of the most influential metal bands of this period. Priest, Maiden, Kiss (listen to the rhythm played on bass in the middle section of "Rocking Man", then listen to "100,000 Years" and tell me Paul Stanley didn't steal it!!) all heavily borrowed from the Budgie riffology. There is variation with melotron, a couple Beatlesque acoustic numbers along with the typical Budgie heaviness of "Whisky River", "Rocking Man" and "Hot As A Docker's Armpit", and the epic "Young Is A World". The production is very stone age but an improvement over the debut. I own all the Tony Bourge era albums with the exception of "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend" and this one is my favorite.

2 out of 5 stars No wonder it's forgotten..........2003-05-29

Listening to this album, you'll get a clear idea why this band wa buried forever in "underground". It's a pedestrian, generic and hardly innovative metal band. None, absolutely none of the songs are memorable.

Their only quality is their leader, Burke Shelley, who really has a great voice.

2 out of 5 stars Most of the time it's average rock without a thrill.......2003-05-16

The rockers on the album is nothing special but of rather mediocre or average standard. The real highlight are the slower acoustic "Rolling home again" and "Make me happy", and especially "Rolling home again" is good, very good!

4 out of 5 stars The Most Underrated Heavy Metal Band Of All Time?.......2002-07-27

BUDGIE, from Wales, were comprised of Burke Shelley on Bass & Vocals, Tony Bourge on Guitar, and Ray Phillips on drums. Phillips was later replaced by Pete Boot and then Steve Williams. Bourge's spot was taken by Big John Thomas in the 80's. Thomas was a fine guitar player, but Bourge has a distinctive style that makes the recordings which include him much more memorable.

SQUAWK was the group's second album, following on the heels of their self-titled debut. The highlight is probably HOT AS A DOCKERS ARMPIT, a vicious rocker with riffs out of some Tony Iommi wet dream. The rest of the album is good heavy rock with a couple of nice (short) accoustic numbers thrown in for variety.
