Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Turn away if you're looking for his acoustic work........2003-06-25

Tim's constant stylistic changes are often extremely jarring. Surely, the same man that was once an accomplished jazz guitarist-turned acoustic stylist is NOT playing Black Sabbath-like crunch-a-thons and singing about bleeding green blood at an age upwards of 40. But it's true. And, as the cliche says: if you're not looking for something different, you'll be disappointed.

But if heavy metal is your forte, you'll love Puke Matrix Tour. "On the Edge," "Don't Know What," "Bleed Green," "Where is the Fire," and "Samantabhadra" are all great crunchers, and Tim often plays so fast as to sound like a buzzsaw. He often uses digital effects taken from his acoustic set-up and applies them to his Gibson Les Paul Standard and keeps his constant shredding from becoming boring (like most metal jams). He also has a prefect voice for this setting; a bluesy, sandpapery tenor
(most fans don't know this, but the reason his voice is like this is because of a car accident in the '70s that severed his vocal chords).

In my opinion, however, this is not one of my favorite CDs. Although I love the relentless crunch of Led Zeppelin, Oasis, or Black Sabbath, I don't react too well after listening to TOO much metal crunching. Puke Martix Tour becomes pretty tedious toward the end. If two soft songs weren't in there ("Leelines" and "Breathing Space," a holdover from his acoustic album Gossip of the Neurons), this would be like listening to Black Sabbath's Paranoid, nonstop, three times in a row. Not a satisfactory time killer. To paraphrase AC/DC: if you want blood, you got it. Green blood, to be exact.

4 out of 5 stars put the gas mask on!.......2000-10-06

This cd rocks. I'd been listening to it now and again for a few months, but it wasn't until recently that I started getting hooked on it--courtesy of my daily commute to work.

While the heavy tunes on "Sanctuary" never really did it for me, they definitly do here. Houston and Johnny provide a really tight rhythm and Tim's guitar just takes off. Standout cuts for me are "On the Edge", "Over It", "Leelines", "Don't Know What", "Bleed Green", "Breathing Space", and "Samantabhadra". The sound of the entire album is an amazing, albeit crazy, balance between funk and heavy metal. You really get the feeling that these guys are having a gas(mask) just going nuts and rocking out. The picture of Tim sprawled out on stage with his guitar strapped on is probably the epitome of a musician getting off to his music in a live setting.

This is definitly the album to get if you're hooked on Tim's sound in general but want to explore the electric side of his playing. I'd also recommend it to metal fans who are looking for a new sound.

Don't pas up a chance to see these guys live either! They are a painfully underrated.

5 out of 5 stars TIM=GOD, period........2000-07-06

First of all, Tim's concerts with Dave Matthews have ruined his reputation. He is a master of all guitar techniques. From subtle acoustic masterpieces to pure electric shredding, the man is awesome to say the least, and this album shows what Tim can do live, without Dave's repetitive acoustic droning getting in Tim's way. The concerts with Dave have increased awareness as to Tim's wizardry however, and for that I am grateful to David. But thier concerts together cause people to go to Puke Matrix shows screaming "Ants Marching! "...I rest my case.

5 out of 5 stars incredible.......1999-10-05

as a friend of the entire band i must say this tour is something everyone should see. a mastermind of musical intensity. their recent show in charlottesville smoked, tim, houston and johnny are some of the best artists that need to be supported and recognized for their abilities not just the association with dave matthews, they're great too,but i'm hoping that this tour gives them the fame they deserve.
