Customer Reviews:
If you like "Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas",.......2003-07-14
you need this disc too! I had the opportunity to see the original Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen a couple of years ago when they regrouped for a couple of shows in St. Paul, Minnesota. I was hanging out after the show getting a few discs signed by the band, when the ol' Commander himself pointed out to me that this disc,(as the other reviewer pointed out)was the rest of the "Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" show. He said they wanted to release it as a double album, but the record company said "No"!
If you're a fan, this disc is for you! If you're a casual listener or just curious about these guys, I'd start someplace else. Maybe the afore mentioned "Deep" disc or the "We've Got a Live One Here!" disc. You will probably recognize more of the songs on those two than on this disc! Once you've got hooked on either or both of them, go back and get this one and any other Lost Planet Airmen disc you can get your hands on!
Also, check out Lead guitarist Bill Kirchen's post Commander Cody stuff! He has a great new band called Bill Kirchen & Too Much Fun! A "must see" live show! They do many of the old Cody songs as well as Bill's own originals and some great cover songs by Bob Dylan, Nick Lowe, Buck Owens, & The Sir Douglas Quintet to name but a few!
quite an impressive live gem.......2000-10-27
I am quite surprised this disc is as good as it is. It is full of an energy that carries throughtout the performance and the audience is definately in on it. Great songs with great grooves. This is more than a live album, it is a document of one the world most vicious parties.
The Other Part of the Show.......2000-02-05
This album documents the non-"Greatest Hits" part of a show that the Commander and company did at Armadillo World HQ in Austin in the early Seventies (the "Greatest Hits" part came out as "Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas", also worth your while).
This is demented western swing/rockabilly at its absolute best, from Billy Kirchen's guitar and lead vocals to the Commander's manic piano and occasional vocal.
Particularly worthwhile tracks are "Ain't Nothin Shakin' (But the Leaves)", "Boppin' the Blues" and a truly demented "Jail House Rock".
