5 out of 5 stars Great blues.......2006-08-03

Johnny's self titled album is a pure blues album unlike his later albums which were more rock oriented. This album has superb contributions from his brother Edgar and the great Willie Dixon on the guitar.I bought this about a week back along with another excellent album Johnny winter and. This cd features several excellent songs like I'm yours and I'm hers,Be careful with a fool and Good morning little school girl.Get this with Second second and third albums.

4 out of 5 stars Soulful Blues........2005-09-07

If you like hard-rockin', crunchy Texas blues, well, this may not be the album for you. "Be Careful with a Fool" is the only song on which Winter really cuts loose in this way. But that song alone is worth the cost of the record, because it's a bonafide gem! He takes this obscure BB King number and infuses it with some of the hottest licks ever recorded. In fact, I do believe Mr. Winter knocks the proverbial frets off his Fender.
However, "Johnny Winter" is very much a blues piece, and drips with passion. It explores a good variety of blues styles.
The opening cut, "I'm Yours and I'm Hers", kicks off with a nice funky riff, and stays electric and funky. "Leland Mississippi Blues" is some great Stratocastic rocky blues, with a blistering solo. "Good Morning Little School Girl" features a horn section and you'll want to shake your thing, especially when Mr. Winter cuts loose in the middle eight.
"I'll Drown in My Own Tears" has Brother Edgar playing some nice honky tonk piano.
The most soulful song is "Back Door Friend", a slow blues burn. Johnny takes all your stress away and puts it on his own shoulder for you. You just kick up your weary feet and smile!
A good deal of this album is a testament to the steel slide guitar style of the Delta. (From the inside-sleeve photo, it appears to be a National-style Gibson Steel.) He plays it beautifully, and it's refreshing to know that in 1969, there was somebody around with enough passion for a "non-popular" musical style to pay homage.
Johnny Winter's voice is passionate as well--some might call it an acquired taste. It certainly wouldn't get him very far on "American Idol"--then again, Simon probably wouldn't get this music anyway.
"Johnny Winter" is a soulful album that comes straight out of the heart of the artist, which is why it has endured.

4 out of 5 stars Guitar Man.......2004-12-15

Johnny Winter is one of the few white guys that can really play and sing the blues without soundung ridiculous. On this, his first album, the best moments are when he takes out his guitar and goes crazy. 'Be careful with a fool' is probably my all time favourite track of his. The acoustic tracks are also outstanding; his version of Robert Johnson's 'when you got a good friend' is one of the earliest examples of a good cover of any of his songs, along with the stones 'love in vain' & the cream 'crossroads'. There are some weak moments also, like when he tries to copy Ray Charles's 'drown in my own tears' note for note. But this is an authentic blues album all around.

5 out of 5 stars Classic First Album From A Living Legend.......2004-12-04

Great album--better than I expected. I saw Johnny live about 12-13 years ago, and I've bought a later album or two over the years, but I didn't realize how great he was back in the late sixties until after hearing this album. Not only is his guitar playing phenomenal, but I love his vocals as well, especially on "Drown In My Own Tears"--absolutely superb. The man can croon the blues with the best of 'em! I highly recommend this album along with his re-released Second Winter as well.
