This quintessential southern rock outfit wasn't so different in its approach as friends and lablemates the Allman Brothers. Both groups embraced an eclecticism, mixing elements of country, blues, gospel, jazz, and southern-fried rock & roll. The Tucker Band reveled in fine musicianship and retained a tight, sophisticated sound without forsaking a simple elegance. Toy Caldwell's "Can't You See" is still played almost hourly (or so it seems) on some stations in the south. This debut album is a must-hear for anyone with a taste for southern cooking. --Richard Gowen
Customer Reviews:
THIS IS NOT THE DEBUT.......2006-08-04
This is not the debut album for The Marshall Tucker Band, and, sadly, it does not include "Take The Highway" or "Can't You See"; with that said, however, it's not a bad collection if you have no others and you get it at a low price.
A GREAT DEBUT ALBUM!.......2003-07-12
As with my other review, I'm giving it a 4 based on the strength of 4 songs on this album: Take The Highway, Can't You See, Losing You and See You Later, I'm Gone. My favorite is See You Later, I'm Gone which is actually MTB's "first" country song. It is this one CD you can take to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Awesome.......2002-03-21
My dad would play Marshall Tucker all the time when I was little, and I love his music. This is one of the best bands there ever was!
Some great MTB songs here........2002-03-18
Although only 35 minutes long, the debut album from The Marshall Tucker Band contains some real gems and can now be viewed as the first of many top-notch albums. The opening "Take the Highway", for me, is as good as any song the band ever did and with their arsenal, that's saying a lot. "Take the Highway", along with so many other MTB songs, has some really powerful vocals by Doug Gray who knows how to sing with feeling. The flute really brings something to the song and it also has a neat interlude. All MTB faithful and even casual radio listeners are, no doubt, familiar with "Can't You See" which is probably the best known song with group founder, guitarist, and lyricist Toy Caldwell on lead vocals. Despite radio burnout, it's still a great song, especially when listened to with the rest of the album.
Other good tunes here include the overlooked "Losing You" and "See You Later, I'm Gone". "Ramblin'" is probably the only song that seems to detract from the others (in my opinion) and "My Jesus Told Me So" isn't particularly strong but there aren't any bad songs here. If you're not familiar with MTB, this is a perfect place to start before working your way up. Enjoy.
