tone deaf okie.......2005-10-06
Wow! Explaination may be needed. I am a child (wannabe musian) of the 80's (born circa 68). I have always loved hard, integral, but grooving rock. Needless to say we didn't see enough solid old school hard rock bands during my high school years. We had to step back and wonder. During one of my attempts to scratch the soil of the almost forgotten early 70's UK rock bands, I came across Alex Harvey and his Sensational Band...Now for my comments.
When I first listened to this disk I was not blown away. As with many fans, I think I forced my first exposure to the band. Not knowing what to expect, it did not smack me, although it has many, in the face as a strong record. I really didn't think much about it and thought I would give it another listen when I had more time to kill. How wrong was I!
I first realized I was hooked when I was driving down the road two days later and couldn't get the infectious grooves of the first listen out of my head. The music is simple at times and complex at others, but always compellingly strong. The mix of musical styles and influences is intriging for a person only exposed to the usual commercial music. You have to search for jewels and in this recording you have one. As I am sure is the case with my friends (good ole boys), your friends probably won't give this band a chance, and may think you are a little nuts. But hear me as you read...this will become one of your favorite discs.
The Best of British.......2002-06-02
My first encounter with Mr Harvey's music came early 1975 when I heard the short version of Anthem on my local AM station. I rushed out to buy the 45 and played it thinking that it was a pleasant piece of music. It wasn't until a few weeks later when I took the single out again and put the wrong side on the turntable that I was gobsmacked - for there on the B-side was the long version of Anthem, one of the most stunning pieces of music I had ever heard. I played it over and over, totally forgetting about the truncated A-side which by that stage had left the charts after two or three weeks. This album contains both the short and long version of Anthem and is worth buying for that track alone. It's a track that comes charging crisp and clear through the speakers with all the hope and dynamism of the early 70s through the prism of the current millennium. It really is one of rock music's most underrated achievements.
a rock & roll god.......2001-11-07
were it not for the sensational alex harvey band, kiss & all the other rock & roll wannabes would not exist. these guys ROCK! alex harvey was an exceptional showman. only a guy like alex & his band could get a whole room full of people to sing "ain't nothin' like a gang bang"! i'm one of the fortunate few who got to see them in concert. if you love PURE rock from a guy with a lotta heart, this it IT! impossible dream is probably his best work. play it at max volume!
an eternal favorite.......2001-08-15
i first heard alex harvey when i was in eighth grade... i had just started listening to alternative radio, and lo and behold: vambo! a distinctly vivid light went on in my head at the time and my appreciation of music began its' ascent into the "unusual". i lost most of my pre-pubescent mind til i got my hands on the album - and thankfully, never really recovered since! i'm relieved to see it can be replaced on cd, since my copy was accidentally destroyed many years ago. my long, sad search is over; and i can hardly wait to hear vambo, anthem, and all the rest once more!!!! this stuff is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! DO NOT pass it up.
