In the early '90s Mercury Rev were a psychedelic thunderstorm just as likely to wash the listener away with electric noise showers of noise as it was to self-destruct with a searing bolt of lightning. Over the years, however, the band's temper has cooled, leaving an evocative, exotic outfit but not a particularly loud one. This may explain why guitarist Grashopper has launched out on his own with this brain-tingling solo album. The disc isn't quite as turbulent as Rev's classic Yerself Is Steam, but it's close, blending sulfurous guitars; lazy, surreal rhythms; and sleepy vocals into an eclectic and inspiring sonic maelstrom that recalls prime-era Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers, and Spacemen 3. --Jon WiederhornCustomer Reviews:
Grasshopper holds his own........2000-09-02
There is some interesting and unexpected use of electronics on this album, such as "Univac Bug Track" which features a lo-fi jungle beat along with the distant plucks of a string section looped, sometimes coming close to videogame soundtrack territory if it weren't so gorgeously muddy. The first track, "Silver Balloons" also has a familiar breakbeat and some nice Spacemen 3 styled guitars and vocals.
