I guess King Crimson is one of those bands; you either get them or you don't. I have to confess that at my first introduction to the band, (1981's "Discipline"), I didn't really get them at all. It took some repeated listening.

Since then I've come to realize that every incarnation of the band, from it's earliest days with Greg Lake (later of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer), to it's power-combo days of Fripp, Belew, Bruford, and Levin, there's nothing the band has produced that isn't miles beyond what anyone else was doing at the same time.

Much of the credit has to go to Robert Fripp, who's innovative use of tape loop, combined with one of the most ecclectic guitar sounds ever recorded, at some points acidic and cutting, then a beat later soaring and majestic, makes him, in my opinion, one of the top five greatest guitarists of all time.
