I have to say that NMB is an amazing band. File Under Black was just great... great lyrics, great instruments... just down right good punk. The first time I heard about this record was the review here which I believe will below mine after this gets posted. I have to say that I was nervous. Before I listened to the album when I recieved it, I read the lyrics. And yes they were different... by themselves it was quite different. However, when the music started playing, they just slid right in. It just sounded so natural. Jason's voice has changed a little bit, but he still has that raspy sound which I love from NMB and Dynamite Kid. The guitars are different however. There is more syncapation... and much more rhythm in general than File Under Black.

Oh, There's Legwork is a perfect start to the single. The first thing you here is a short guitar line, which is then is then followed by the energy of the rest of the band. The song in general is fast and just full of raw energy. NMB then chose the "dark" song of the album: Peace On Mars... Jason just yells through the words as the guitars rip through the music. Then there is Traffic is a Global World. That is just different... but really catchy... It just has a 80's sound with the "Woooooo"s... a song which is good to get stuck in your head. Genuine might be my favorite... another "dark" song Just plain good punk rock. The chord changes are awesome and Jason screams more in this song. It is awesome. Iscrapbook is another up beat song... it is like punk meets the blues. The last song... is the biggest change in the album. But what I love the best about it is the guitar solo at the end. That is a big step for the band. This is a medium tempo song. In the middle of the song, the tempo just changes all together to really slow. It's different, but it sounds good.... which leads into the cool guitar solo.

Overall the album is just an amazing step for NMB. I just can't wait for their next album... which is said to already be finished. When a band changes, they can totally destroy their sound. But NMB is still there, making good music. A different sound that is still raw punk.

well, what happened here is NMB put out 6 songs that are slower and have a broader musical scope than any on their previous full-length, which was chock-full of catchy, speedy, singalong-y gems. while this shot at experimentation is not a bad decision in itself, it happens to be poorly executed here. the first track, "oh, there's legwork", isn't bad. but the following 5 songs are.
musically, it appears the band tried to avoid being pigeonholed. mission accomplished, but at the expense of sounding unfocused. lyrically... man, what happened lyrically? the lyrics are bad. just bad. i usually really like this guy's writing, but here it just seems childish. like his most insecure moments, sitting up at night sleepless, frantically scribbling things down in his journal, have just been chucked into these frameless songs. yes, we all have those moments, but thankfully we usually keep them in check and don't try to turn them into songs. and if we do, i'm glad most of us don't get around to recording those songs.
