4 out of 5 stars More catchy XTC-inspired pop.......2002-02-09

One of the lesser-known acts in the Elephant 6 neo-pop stable, the Minders are America's answer to XTC, edgy pop that rests squarely in Lennon-McCartney land but with an occasional tendency to annoy. Fortunately, the latter tendency is largely absent on this album, their most consistent -- and most fully produced -- to date. Not every song bears repeating (particularly the more downbeat tracks later on the disc), but it offers a handful of hooks that will stick in your brain for weeks. The title track and the similar-sounding "Give Me Strength" will make any XTC fan cry ..."Hand on Heart" is a rollicking romp, and if "Right as Rain" isn't the catchiest song of the year, it's at least in the running.

5 out of 5 stars The Minders Prove Their Worth.......2001-05-28

After buying and listening to their last EP, Down in Fall, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Minders. Down in Fall was an incredible artistic step for the Minders but didn't seem to fit their traditional style. Golden Street is a huge step for the Minders. On Hooray for Tuesday and Cul-de-sacs and Dead Ends, their songs average about 1-2 minutes. Golden Street proves that they are indeed growing as musicians. The music follows what they've done before but takes it a step forward. They develop more individual style. The introduction to the song Golden Streets takes the listener back to a time where 60s pop never died but they place a modern twist on their music so that it is appealing to everybody. When I first played this album on the college radio station I DJ for, I was amazed that the first song I played was three minute songs. I have seen the Minders twice in concert and they're even better live. I would like to wish them luck on making more incredible albums.

5 out of 5 stars minders 'golden street'.......2001-05-18

4 1/2 stars... this album is a lot better than i expected it to be. i bought the minders first album 'hooray for tuesday' a while back, and while i thought it was a worthwhile pop album, it doesn't even come close to matching the intelligence and intensity displayed on 'golden street'. i've listened to this album everyday since i bought it (something that hardly happens these days) and it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people who fell in love with the earlier minders albums would downplay how great 'golden street' is. more than likely they were looking for something that they can bob their "collective" heads to and chew bubble gum while speaking in indie lingo with elitist "friends". there is more to the minders than that, 'golden street' is located in a complicated labyrinth of a strange city and whether you see the buildings and their inhabitants or a dot on a map is really dependant upon what you (the traveller) brings on this fantastic voyage.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT LISTEN.......2001-05-03

I've been listening to this disc since I ordered it in mid April 2001. The disc begs to be listened to in one sitting, preferably with headphones on and eyes closed. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who just wants some new music to listen to in the background while cleaning up the living room. It's a thinking person's kind of disc. Acoustic and mellow at times, very 60's Syd Barrett psyche-pop at times. I have yet to find a single flaw; OK, maybe the last song goes on a little too long. But generally, every note and cymbal tap is exactly where it should be. I only wish there was some way to get the lyric sheet. The sound, for me, is reminiscent of XTC. Also reminds me of the Zombies, or early Pink Floyd. So, if you like those guys, by all means, order straight-away!! I bought everything available by them in one order, and this one, for me, is the band's best work.
