Album Description

· At a time when disco reigned supreme the five innovative young New York bands featured on this unique compilation - Fleshtones, Revelons, Bloodless Pharaohs (Brian Setzer's pre-Stray Cats band), Comateens and Student Teachers - searched for an alternative. Borrowing liberally from the great bands of rock `n' roll, they created 2x5's music with an infectious spirit and energy in the tradition of the original nuggets bands like The Standells, Love and Chocolate Watch Band. · This CD, produced by Blondie's Jimmy Destri and originally released in 1980 on Marty Thau's Red Star Records, was designed to tap into raw emotions and tell the truth, or even a beautiful lie, and that's why this garage classic has survived and is more relevant than ever. · Classic and original 1970 New York punk compilation never before released on CD. · Digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes. · Includes brand new liner notes by Marty Thau.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I was there, kind of! and now you can be there, too!!.......2005-05-21

This is a long-overdue CD release! And an essential piece of 1980s pop history.

I was at the release party for the original vinyl LP, which I used to own and which I stupidly sold at some point in the past and which is now worth about a hundred bucks.

I was living in NY City when this band came out and knew some of the people in some of the bands, especially the Student Teachers. The Student Teachers were a power-pop band with a very wistful yet powerful sound. They are one of the more obscure bands on the record.

One band is still going strong: the Fleshtones. They haven't changed much during the past quarter century. These two songs exist in other versions: the Fleshtones produced their own low-budget versions in the 1970s and they were redone when they eventually signed with a major label--- but they sound the best here!

The Bloodless Pharaohs are sort of an early version of the Stray Cats: the Stray Cats were a spinoff from this band, which is not rockabilly at all. In any case, this is Brian Setzer's first record. He is not responsible for the spooky vocals which sound like a moose on PCP.
